Snug As A Bug

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It has been a while since I wrote in this journal.  Had a few health problems which seem to be improving now but I still have a very painful neck and left shoulder so I am still trying to keep my computer time down because typing hurts.

Well, the cavity wall insulation was done last Thursday.  I need not have worried.  I was absolutely amazed at the speed.  From the time they arrived until they time they left was forty minutes and around ten minutes of that was taken up with drinking the tea and eating the biscuits we provided for them and then getting us to sign all the paperwork when it was done.

As for taking all the ornaments down, it proved unneccessary.  No vibrations at all.  In fact the noise I had dreaded was not much greater than my washing machine on spin cycle!  So we were well pleased.  We have noticed a difference and are keeping our heating thermostat down low.  Just as well we had it done.  British Gas, without any warning or notification to us, have raised our gas bill by £9 per month and our electricity by £7 per month.  Absolutely scandalous. We only found out when we saw it had been taken from the bank.  We shall certainly be changing our energy supplier in the very near future.

The community charge will be going up again in April.  It amazes me that they think pensioners can pay these sort of prices when the pension never increases to cover them.  It is a worry but I know there are thousands in our position.  The government do not give a hoot about it, why should they?  They all sit there earning enormous salaries and getting perks and when they retire they write their memoirs and get paid heftily and then they often take up a position on the board of some big company and continue to rake in the cash.  None of them ever have to struggle like the rest of us, none of them will have to live on just a state pension and have to wonder whether they can afford to heat their home.

The schools around here are all closed due to the "winter vomiting bug" that seems a regular thing every year now.  What causes all this sickness?  We never used to have all this years ago?  Is it pollution in the air, is it the additivies and chemicals in the food, is our resistance getting lower? It does seem that there is more illness around these days than we ever had.  What are your views about it?

Mike is finally over his cold, my friend's funeral went off very well - her husband told me the other day.  Apart from that, not much news.  All very quiet here.  The weather is awful, strong winds, just started raining and it is so dark you would think it was evening.  Roll on Spring.

I will try and visit a few of you if I can but please understand that because I am in pain right now I might not be able to make it to you all.  Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

Hope you are all having a good week.

So glad your cavity wall insulation was carried out with the least disruption.  We have had another wet day here, but no winds as yet, but I am sure they are on the way.  Glad you are experiencing some improvements healthwise.  Take care.  Eileenx

I am sorry your having pain jeanette.. love your graphic today... the insulation went well..that's good.. i don't know what to think about all the illnesses but it does seem that we have more of them doesn't it? Who ever heard of the school closing down for a bug? We pay a lot for our electricity over here too.. and it is every single month...
Hope you get to feeling better soon...

you just get better, and visit us when you feel up to it.  I love the graphic you used today, it is so pretty and so peaceful looking. so glad the cavity wall is up, they were quick huh? I think it's all the chemicals they put into the food causing all this sickness. Hope you feel better soon. ((((((((hugs)))))))))))

So glad to see your post this morning !  I know the fuel bills to heat my house went way up last year and this year, I've kept the thermostat turned way down to avoid bills that were just overwhelming. We have had a mild winter up to now and that helps too.  I need that insulation and new windows because my home is old and drafty. However, that isn't in the budget either. Just can't win...I put on my layers and keep warm.  Take good care !  'On Ya' - ma

It seems that you aquired the spray in expanding foam insulation that seals off all air cracks and has great insulating value.    By just drilling 1 inch holes into the wall the foam is injected and viola!    I will be looking into the cost for it being done on my addition down the road.     The addition that is open now in the front of my cabin is covered in 1 inch Styrofoam sheeting and with fiberglas on the inside it has been doing a marvelous job.    I am itching from the fiberglas everytime I work on it.      I hope you get to feeling better and the graphic on your entry is wonderful with the parchment type scroll background with country style home and swans in spring.     I have been having pain and unable to sit for much time.     Yesterday I did start feeling better and have been working on a pen and ink drawing for a J-land friend of his German Sheperd when it was about one year old.     I won't be heading back outside working as my bad cold keeps coming back every time.      It feels good to be working on the pen and ink as it has been a long time since I have done any artwork.       We will both feel better if even the sunshine comes out until spring as it has been raining her a lot.    mark

Sorry to hear that you are in pain Jeannette, could it be anything to do with this miserable weather?  Roll on Spring!
I get dual fuel from Scottish power and they have put my monthly premium up by £30!!!  I am going to USwitch to try and find a better deal.
I have a very drafty Victorian house of solid brick, do I assume that that precludes me from this foam insulation? As it would have nowhere to go :-/
hope you are feeling better soon :-D

Freda

I'm going through the same thing with my parents (well, now it's with my mom).  Everything here goes up except Pop's pension and the social security.  Every month is a creative struggle of sorts.

And yes, I agree.  We live in a toxic world.  And we'ver really no one to blame but ourselves...

About the bug closing schools.  I am a working mum so don't think I am getting at them, but I have heard of so many kids getting sent to school when they are sick because there is no one at home to take care of them.
These sickness bugs are very contagious and it only takes one ill child to go to school and by the end of the day half of his class mates will have been in contact with it, and we all know how careful kids are with basic hygiene!!!!!!!!!!!

What is a comunity charge? Neighborhood dues or such???
Our gov. officials are the same.they could care less about the "little people" ( elderly, handicapped, poor)...because they are going to get nice fat pensions when they retire...more money that we will ever see in our lifetimes...not to mention great health bennefits, etc...makes one ill.
love ya,
carlene

That flu bug is hitting hard in the States, too.  I guess nursing homes are really having a hard time with the elderly getting very sick with it.  Glad you felt well enough to post today.  Hope your neck and shoulder heal quickly!  I  love your graphic this morning.  Beautiful.  So nice the work you had done went on so painlessly (LOL)...  Have a lovely day.
Hugs,  Kathy

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, I'm sure winter has something to do with it, I know it does for me.  I agree with you about government and big business guys, but the population of us retirees is growing so they'd better watch out, we may revolt, Ha!  Glad your insulation is working, we sure need it in our house, we need double pane windows, but my husbands not hep on putting them in, so expensive.
The weather here is cold and snowy, but at least I'm off today.  Take care, Joni

Hi Jeanette,  Poor you.  Do hope that you will be feeling lots better soon and back to your usual self.  I do think there seems much more illness amongst kids nowadays  why...dear knows could be lots of things like their diet, not getting enough fresh air, lack of exercise, .I sure can't remember my Mother keeping me of school unless I was in hospital !! plasters, crutches and all I still had to get to school...and walk!! no car etc.  she sure was gruel!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Look after yourself.  love Sybil xx

You are so right about the goverment and our pensions. I am very glad we hare having a mild winter up here as we usually have had about three falls of smow and many nights of frost but the temperature has been staying up nicely this winter touch wood so far, which is good job as we have just paid a bit gas bill.  Hope you are better soon. LOve Joan.

Ah Jeannette, sorry that you have been in pain.  I suffered a frozen shoulder a few years ago and it made life very difficult for me.  I hope that you are taking some medication to help.  I actually went for acupuncture in the end, which really did work, it was amazing and it didn't hurt at all and I am a person who is the worst coward in the world.  I'm glad you got your insulation in without any disruption and hope that it will save you some money on your fuel bills. I think that pensioners should not have to pay council tax and also should have massive discounts on fuel bills.  Hope you feel better soon.  Hugs.  Terry x

That's wrong if the gas company didn't tell you they were raising prices. By law they should give you one month's notice at least. I'd complain to them, very loudly! I could write an essay on why kids fall victim to bugs nowadays! Remember when we were young, our mothers stayed home. We'd come home at night to delicious cooking smells, freshly cooked food every day! Now parents are at work and buy convenience foods with no substance, so many kids are raised on fish fingers or burgers because they're quick and easy to cook. They don't build up a good constitution any more to fight off illness! We had fresh veg from the garden and fresh meat every day, of course we had childhood illnesses but not all these weird bugs that knock kids down now! I hope you feel better soon, I sometimes get shoulder pain if I'm on the computer too long. Jeannette xx

Jeannette, so sorry to hear you have not been doing well.  Hope your neck and shoulder heal quickly as you can see we all love to hear from you.  Hope you are staying warm as it seems that any cold at all will exacerbate any joint pain.  Maybe with your new insulation, it will cut down on the cold drafts and on your electricity bills so that you will at least break even with the new rate increase.    I know once you are on a fixed income, it is impossible to get ahead.

The stomach flu bug has been going around here also.  Both my daughter and sister's families have had it.  I think one of the reasons, it can spread so quickly is because we have become so mobil and are exposed to more people and more diseases.

I absolutely love your pink rose!  Pink roses are my favorite.  Your other picture is pretty too.   Feel better soon, Jeanette.  Nancy

Hi Jeannette, sorry to hear that you have shoulder probs its a real nuisance ....good new about your insulation work maybe it was the biscuits you offered speeding up the job!!!,i think that the weather is a lot to do with these bugs we need some cold weather to kill all these bugs and viruses floating around and the earth has got so anti bacterial with sprays handwashes pesticides soaps etc etc ,when we were small we often used to eat chewing gum off other children and we had good immunity from minor illnesses and we were encouraged to use tissues and hankies they dont do it so much nowadays  and all the outside play we had with our coats fastened up and healthy cabbagey school dinners with the free morning milk and a little rest in the afternoon all built up healthy immunity ...nowadays too many children sit at home cos its not safe to allow them the freedom we enjoyed so they sit at home with a can of coke and a tub of pringles (at risk of going on a bit now so i will shut up lol)anyhow hun hope your service is soon resumed i miss reading about you ,love dee x

Dear Jeanette,
I am thrilled that you are back here! I thought you were busy with family; I'm so glad youare feeling better!
Your graphic here is stunning; it looks like a painting.
Jeanette, in some places of America there are non-profit organisations that have thrift stores and do fund raisers; all with the mission to:
a. help retired people pay their heating bills
b. provide a day center for creative activities
c. provide a warm meal
d. provide transportation to the center for seniors
Do you have someone in your area who would be willing to work on that?
love,natalie

Hello Jeannette........I hope you are feeling better. My nieces are back to school. I am working as usual. I just thought I would pop in and say hello. Do take care my dear friend. GET WELL SOON !!!!!!!!

So sorry you have not been well. The weather is so miserable it is best to stay indoors anyway. Keep warm and God bless. I agree about the rising costs of utilities and council tax. They do not put our pension up to cope with it. What is the use of a fuel grant when everything keeps going up. Love Conniex

Hello Jeannette,  I`m so glad you are feeling a little better now, though you are still in pain with your neck and shoulder. I hope that too get`s easier for you soon. British Gas certainly know that we can`t manage without them, why else would they raise their prices to such ridiculous heights. They will be reducing them in the Spring because they have no choice but our next bill will be through the roof even though we`ve been trying to keep costs down. It`s a scandal that they can charge what they like and take advantage of those on a lower income. Take care.

Love Sandra xxxx

Take care of yourself, Jeannette.  The computer is so tough on the back and the neck.  The Uk and the US are so much alike.  It seems like every couple of months, all my pills go up a few dollars.  It's extremely rough on those with fixed incomes.  My BF just retired in April and has been struggling this winter.  Take care!  Love xx Chris
