I like this Graphic of Big Ben and the scene on the River Thames. Many people think that Big Ben is the name of the tower when, in fact, it is the name of the bell that chimes out the time. The bell is silent at the moment as essential maintenance work is being carried out.
I am sick of talking about the weather. It is truly awful. The trees are practically bending double today, leaves flying off them, things being blown around the garden. I even have the light on because it is so dark and gloomy and the heating is also on low. We have to be thankful that we did not experience any of Hurricane Dean and I know that many countries get much worse happenings, but this is the worst "summer" I ever remember. They say it might turn warm and sunny for the weekend. The leaves on my trees are already turning to Autumn colours.
So why the title of this entry? Well, I was discussing films with someone the other day. I was asked which one was my favourite film and was there one I absolutely detested? I said there was one that I could not abide and was asked the reason why. As I do not have anything else much to write about I will tell you why.
Firstly, this is the film
Yes, I know it is considered a classic, the acting was excellent, the settings beautiful. So what do I have against it? Well, the film was released in 1952 and I was obviously still a young child. My family were great movie goers. Both my parents adored films and we, as a family, would attend two or sometimes three times per week. My father always fancied being a cowboy so I do not think there is a western film that I have not seen!
We had a cinema at the top of the road we lived in. It was called the Astoria. It was managed by an elderly couple - I shall never forget them - especially him. He moaned about every film they showed. When you went to buy your ticket, his wife would be in the box and he would be standing next to the ticket box. He always said hello and then " we have a duff old film on this week". Everything was a duff old film to him, I do not think he liked anything. Anyway, I digress.
My Mother worked in those days when women generally did not. She had no need to, my Father earned enough money to keep us all in reasonable style. She worked because she wanted to, she hated housework and most domestic things.
This always caused a dilemma because she had nobody she could farm me out to. My Dad repeatedly asked her to stay at home but she would have none of it. The neighbours all got fed up with my being foisted onto them so on summer holidays she got really stuck.
Came the above mentioned year and The Quiet Man had been released. Naturally it came to the Astoria. As it was a very popular film, the elderly managers either decided or were told to run it for two weeks.
My Mother got on very well with the wife of the couple who ran the cinema and that is how she found her answer. Every day on her way to work on the afternoon shift we would take me with her, drop me off at the cinema, pay my entrance fee and then go off and leave me. The attendant ushered me to a seat and that was it.
The first time I saw it I quite liked it. After all I did not know the story and although young, I was quite entertained by it all even if I did not understand all of it. However, day followed day and there I sat seeing the same scenes re-played over and over again, the same advertisements, the same second feature. For ten whole days I had to watch that film! I sat there miserable and lonely, nobody to talk to, having to constantly move seats because of the "dirty old men" who frequented afternoon matinees - although the usherette did try to keep her eye on me.
My brothers teased me with it for years afterwards but for me, it was no laughing matter. I came to detest that film with a passion and I still do. I think if I was onboard a plane and that was the film they were showing, I would bale out. I run a mile if it ever comes on the t.v.
You may detect a hint of bitterness in what I have written. Yes, I am bitter about many things that happened in my childhood, things that formed me into the fearful person that I am today. However, this is not why I am writing this entry.
It just gave me an idea. I wanted to find out if there is any film that you particularly hate. Any film that frightened you, upset you or you took a dislike to for any reason. If there is, I would love to know what the film was and why you dislike it.
So, come on dear friends and readers, I am sure you can come up with something. If you cannot think of a film then maybe there is a t.v. programme you dislike or disliked. I shall be interested to read your answers.
*P.S. Strange that I was to meet John Wayne in person and have a conversation with him many years later whilst I was holidaying in Spain. I have written about it earlier in this journal. No, I never told him that I hated that film lol

Morning! Hope you're doing well, have had you in my prayers. {{}}
Films? There's several that I don't like for different reasons...LOL not enough room here to go in to it all.
A few TV shows I don't care for either for various reasons.
Sorry you had a bad childhood, that's sad to hear. But altho you are a fearful person...you're a warm & caring person too. {{}}
Hugs,
Sugar
I'm one of those who adore it. But I can see how miserable a child would get by the daily reshowings of the same film. - Barbara
The last blog I wrote mentioned a film that I had been forced to sit through because the person I was with wanted to see it. (It had actually been advertizing a musical, outside the cinema)It was called 'Peeping Tom' and I advise anyone of a sensitive nature not to be curious enough to see it. It was truly terrifying. I was only 18 and did not have the courage to walk out, so I sat there, my eyes everywhere except on the screen, but the sound told me in explicit detail exactly what was going on =:-O
The films I never get tired of watching are 'The Jolson Story' and 'Jolson Sings again', but I love 'Bridget Jones Diary' also :-D
Nasty wet, cold, blowy day here Jeannette - sigh.......
Freda
I have seen that movie. A movie that I cannot watch anymore is called "The Fog". It is very scarey and now thanks to that movie I am scared to death of fog. I will not go out in it, look out the window or door at it, and I keep the house locked up when it is foggy. Grown woman afraid of fog? Yep that's me, lol. ((((((((hugs)))))))))
Love,
Cindy xoxoxo
Hi Jeannette, I think any film that had John Wayne in I hated....apart from Hellfighters and True Grit, they were good. I think my all time favourite has to be Gigi, purely because of the innocence of it (oh and the fact that Maurice Chevalier reminded me of my favourite Godfather!) & the music.....Thank Heaven for Little Girls; closely followed by Daddy Long Legs!
Sorry to hear that you weather isn't very good. We are about the same here, but it's gotten warmer and supposed to be quite steamy today. My mom worked too and she like it. She said she had to work, but I think it was more of she wanted to work. I know I grew up before I should have taking care of my younger sisters. Hope you find a few smiles and some sunshine today ! 'On Ya' - ma
(((((((((((gentle hugs)))))))))))) I tried to write more about you being left like that and every word came out looking wrong. The world should have been a safe place for you because your parents should have made it safe back then. I am so sorry, dearheart.
Re movies, I especially dislike the more modern horror movies where you find out suddenly at the end that it's still not safe -- the menace is not vanquished but will be back.
loving you
karyl
((((((((((((((JEANNETTE))))))))))))))))I am sorry you had some dislikes from your past and I can also understand why you didnt like that movie,I wouldnt like it either if I had to sit there all thoes times watching it over and over again.HAve a good day.I cant tihnk of a movie I dont like, but,I will let you know if I come up with anything.Oh wait,I just did.The movie called the It by Steve King,I hate that movie with a passion, why, because my couisn made me and my Mom watch it and it scared me to death and I hate clowns.LOL.
Most hated film - Lord of the Flies, hate the film and hate the book, which we were forced to disect in great detail over several weeks in English lessons at school! I also hate any film with Jim Carrey in, even those where he is disguised i.e. The Grinch. Harder to choose a favourite film, there are a lot I like and would watch several times and have! LOL. Love B x
I hope you have a good rest of your week. I too love that top graphic. It's beautiful.

Funnily enough, I was only thinking the other day about my mum who used to be a cinema usherette - how on earth did they not die of boredom having to put up with the same film day after day, especially if it was something they really hated. Imagine having to put up with terrible screaming in 'Peeping Tom' day after day! =:-O
I lvoe that film the quiet man he was a strong queit man nad wish we had more men like that!!!!! but I understand why you wouod not like it. BUT sure could use a few of todays boys to watch it!!!!!!you know......... my grandmother farmed her kids off at the cinema too!!!!! so she could see a man we all think!!!!!!!! my mom hates domestic chorse and being a domestic woman. tkaing care of her man!!!!!! I love doing that i do get tired at times but I love doing that as my job. nothing better than taking care of your family!!!!!!! my mom thinks community service she does out does all the STUFF jobs she calls it like for cancer and such!!!!!!! but she treats those around her so illy
My brother was a film projectionist when he left school and I got to take his lunch box to the cinema for him. I sat through Seven Brides for Seven Brothers for a whole week of nights, and I still enjoy it although it looks so corny by comparison to today's cinema techniques. The film I feared the most, it probably has something to do with my Catholic upbringing, was the Exorcist. For weeks, maybe months after seeing that film, I would waken up with the hackles on my neck and back standing upright! I daren't breath deeply I was so sure that there was an entity standing close to my face. I will never watch this kind of film again! When I was 16 I saw a film about a snake woman. It wasn't what you saw then, its what you imagined and the music built you up ready for the fright..or so you though sometimes. The Booooo! Always happened when you least expected it. That kind of suspense was so much better than the graphics we have to watch nowadays.
Sorry you had to put up with that neglect. We can't choose our parents but we sure as heck can choose our friends.
Stay Safe and warm when the dark evenings draw in.....woooohoooo! Lol!
In fun!

One of the girls in my jewellery class at art school worked part time as an usherette for a year...Everyone thought cool job you get to see films for free...Her reply was always 'well it's ok seeing a film the first couple of times but after the umpteenth time in a row then it gets boring'...No wonder you hate that film LOL...The other issue of your reason i can relate to from the other side...Every summer whilst i was a student i worked at a local swimming pool as a lifeguard amongst other duties...We had several kids who's parents gave them the money to get into the pool all day and basically used us as a childminding service...One time when i banned one of the little toerags for a week he went nuts at me...Said he had no-where to go as his parents worked...The mother came in that evening having a barny with the manager...But he stood by my decision :o) After the week was up that wee toerag tried to make my life a misery but i changed tack on him...After my shifts ended i always went for a swim after...So during that time i decided to teach the lad how to dive properly and swimming strokes he couldn't do...Some of the others who we were basically babysitting joined in as well...I know i was doing for free what their parents should have either been doing themselves or paying for but i enjoyed it...And i knew that i was fortunate and had my mum at home when i was their age...There are a few films i dislike a lot but the one main one i really really can't stand is Mary Poppins...As you know both my sons are ASD and mikey used to watch that one over and over an over an over an over ALL the time...Rewinding his favourite bits all the time too...For about 3 years...I would quite happily destroy every copy that exists everywhere of that dratted film LOL..Hope you are well and continuing to get better every day Caff xxxxxx
Forgot to add that when the weather is foul down south it is lovely up here and when we have it all yuk it is lovely down south...This summer has been so inconsistent with the weather that even planning to hang out clothes to dry can't be done <sigh> Caff xxxxx
yes. the other night I watched a few minutes of one of hte most dreadful films I have ever seen...The devils rejects. I do not think they should make such films, might give sick people ideas.
I love your graphic, very pretty.
I quite liked the film ,but can see why you dont like it ,I wouldnt want to see anything that many times ,though did sit through many showings of Thomas the tank engine(on video ) with my Grandsons ,but that is different isnt it lol ? ...love Jan xx
There certainly is a film I hate Jeannette, it`s called The Thin Red Line and it`s about the 2nd World War, at least I think it is. It made no sense at all to me or Jim even though it was criticly acclaimed. The dialogue was so quiet and understated that we had no idea what they were talking about and we left the cinema bored stiff and none the wiser. As for TV it would have to be The Price Is Right...the catchphrase `Come on down` was enough to make me reach for the off switch...lol! As for the weather you`ve said it all...sigh.
Love Sandra xxxx
The Exorcist. I won't even watch advertisments for it. Too too scary. And The Sound of Music. Too too overplayed. Not all women make good mothers--mine was still a child herself when I was born. And knowing all the mistakes I made with my daughter, I have tried to forgive my Mother her mistakes with me.
Hmmmmmm Jeannette I'm not a movie or tv person so I can't answer this honestly............ loved your story tho
hugs
d
i don't think there are any movies i dislike:) TV its the reality shows now a days drive me nuts
Deb
I hate 'The Wizard of Oz' Hate it. I have never watched it with my kids, although, they have watched it. I was forced to watch it each year, because it was only on tv ONCE a year and it was such a treat.
TREAT? I was scared to death of the flying monkeys, and the witch and had nightmares from it. Each year my parents would say, 'it isn't real...you are older now' and this went on until finally around 11 years old when they finally stopped forcing me to watch it! UGH!
be well,
Dawn
The movie Open Water left me with a horrible feeling for days after, wish I had not seen it... and hubby loves to watch The Thing, but I saw it once and that was enough....
Stay dry and toasty....
Linda :)
Like Dawn I can't stand the Wizard Of Oz. I think it's Dorothy's whiny voice that made me avoid it! It's certainly been like winter for the past few days, I'm hoping for a nice September but I shan't hold my breath! Lol! Jeannette xx
Dr. Zhivago! My friend and I wentto the cinema to see it but because it was a long film and I had to be home by 10 I hd to leave before the end. I've watched it so many times sice but it's so long I nod off so I STILL haven't seen the end. The very thought of watching that lot again just to see the endng gives me the heebie-jeebies!
Angie
Great graphics!
John Wayne was my hero and that was one of my favorite films with him in it. But then again, I watch it my choice and not because it is my babysitter. I think if I had to experience any film the way you had to experience that one, I might hate movies all together. I have The Quiet Man on DVD.
My least favorite movies are the testosterone (sp?) flicks like the Rambo, Die Hard, etc. I hate anything that portrays violence for the sake of violence and in such a romantic manner. And I hate horror flicks, too.

Bekcie x
Back in 1943, when I was about eight, we went to see Claud Rains in `Phantom of the Opera'. It absolutely terrified me; we lived in a large spooky house, and I didn't sleep outside the eiderdown for months !

Quatermass and the pit was a series on television that made me scared.....Love Jeanxx
Dear Jeannette, Just catching up slowly here. I hope your little grandson is now better, bless him. What a worry for you all. I love your graphic with Big Ben and your entry. It was sad reading why you didn't like the Quiet Man. I used to hate going to the pictures, didn't matter what film it was really because I couldn't sit still for that long. I still can't. The family used to go and leave me at home, I'd have much more fun not going. I still don't like going to the pictures but go with the kids and normally do a bit of my own sideshow, e.g. falling asleep and snoring. I do hope you and your hubby are feeling ok and that you have enjoyed the lovely weather recently. Hugs, Tells x
