At around 1 a.m. this morning England suffered an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. It is, apparently our biggest earthquake in 25 years. People all over the country reported feeling it. We were both still up at 1 a.m. and felt absolutely nothing, the earth did move for us, I am glad to say. As far as I know only one man was injured when a chimney stack fell through his roof.
I am not turning alerts back on just yet, I got to the stage where I needed a complete break from journals and more time away from the computer. I have spent countless hours glued to the chair in front of the screen for the past ten years. I used to transcribe old records for people researching their family trees and was sometimes doing that for twelve hours per day, at the same time I was also doing research on my own family tree.
When that all finished I got into journals and, as many of you know, I used to post every day plus visiting so many other journals. Just under three weeks ago I logged on and saw the list of alerts and all the e-mails from my graphics group plus personal e-mails and I sat there and thought "I just cannot do this, I cannot face it." I knew it was time to take a break.
So I shall only probably post about once per week for the foreseeable future and I will return to commenting on your journals when I feel ready.
So, what has been happening in our lives? Well, Mike has been extremely unwell for a week but thankfully he is picking up now although we are awaiting test results from the hospital. The doctor ordered Mike to have the tests done because of the symptoms he was experiencing.
Nathan naturally caught Chicken Pox but not necessarily from Daniel because he is in a different class at pre-school and everyone in his class went down with it as well.
Our sun-lounge is in need of major repair work. We lost all the carpeting out there due to water getting in so it looks a bit of a mess at the moment. Dean is on holiday this week and they had hoped to make a start but Mike has not been well enough. It can wait but at the moment it is not pleasant to look at. When Mike took the carpet and underlay up before he was ill there were some horrible vinyl tiles underneath and that is our view right now. The whole structure really needs to be torn down as it was a home-made affair when it was erected well over forty years ago, but we cannot possibly afford to put up a new one. It has done well considering its age.
We did have a scare a couple of weeks ago, thought we had lost Jack. Mike took the two dogs out for their nightly romp in the local fields. The railway runs close by and maintenance work was being done. There were a couple of louds bangs and big flashes of light and when Mike looked around, Jack had disappeared. He searched and searched but could not find him. He came home without him, then took the car out driving around the streets to see if he could spot him. Nothing. By now it was gone 1 a.m. and we were getting frantic. We were scared he would get onto the main road and be run over. Maybe even stolen as he is so very friendly towards everyone. Yes, he is micro-chipped but unfortunately when someone takes a dog to the vet it is not normal policy to run a scanner over them. So, with his collar and tag removed, he could belong to anybody.
After the third attempt, we rang the police to report him missing and give full details. Neither of us could sleep so Mike said he would go looking again. I told him to take his powerful torch this time. Lucky I suggested it. Mike went back to the fields and stood in the middle and shone the light around. He saw two green orbs glowing in the darkness which could have been a fox. But he went towards them and yes, it was Jack - cowering under some bushes and now frightened that he had been left behind and had been alone for around three hours. He crawled to Mike on his belly.
We were so relieved to have him back. It took Jack ages to be willing to go back to the fields again at night but he seems over it now.
I have been doing lots of reading and catching up on things I have not donebecause of spending so much time on the computer.
I was happy to see one friend, David, return to journalling and sad to hear we had lost another journal friend, Irene. I have now added Irene's photo and journal link to our memorial journal.
Well, there is not much else to tell you. The evenings are really drawing out now and the new leaves will soon be breaking out on the trees. This Sunday is Mother's Day so I would like to wish all U.K. Mum's and Grandmothers, a very happy day.
I hope life is being kind to you all and I will be back commenting when I feel the time is right for me. Take care everyone
Love,

Hi Jeannette, Glad to hear from you again. Hope Mike will feel better soon. And so the kids. It is better if the children have chicken pox when they are still so little. My husband had it when he was 35 and it was not very nice!
We felt the quake very strongly here in York! I was still awake and I felt the house shaking terribly twice, my chair rolling and some books falling from the shelves. My daughter wake up saying that her bed was 'moving' and our hamster squeaked loudly for the first time in her life. I was rather scared as I knew immediately what that was. I had felt a few quakes when I used to live in Italy and a couple of times it was so bad that we had to sleep in the cars. I'm glad nothing serious occured - apart from that young man injured in Barnsley and some fallen chimneys - but I sincerely hope it won't happen again. It is a horrible sensation.
Wish you all the best.
Ciao

Jeannette I hope Mike is feeling a lot better now ~ and I am so glad you found Jack can just imagine how frightened he must have been out there on his own ~ You have a good well earned rest from JLand we will be here waiting for you ~ Ally x
Hi Jeannette good to hear from you, wishing Mike a speedy recovery, glad to hear you found Jack safe and sound and that he seem's to have got over fear of walking in the fields at night. Enjoy your break, away from journals, it's nice to do other things for a change.
Take care
Yasmin

I was so glad to see your post this morning as I had heard of the eathquake on the radio. Good to know all is well in your part of England anyway. I do hope your husband is feeling better and that the tests you are waiting for bring some good news for you. We've had major snow storms this week and I got into work 1 hour late due to having to shovel out the driveway even to get off to work.
I'm so ready for spring. Take care and thanks for letting us know you are ok.
'On Ya' - ma
So glad to hear from you Jeanette.
I'm sorry to hear Mike is not too well, and hope he recovers soon.
I'm afraid the earth didn't move for me either, just my luck.:)
My daughter felt it though, but she thought she was dreaming.
Hope Nathan is recovered as well.
I'm glad you got Jack back. That must have been very frightening for you all.
Have a great break and a Happy Mothers Day Jeanette.
Hugs to you all.

I am so happy to hear Jack is once again safe & sound at home - I would have been frantic!! I hope Mike starts feeling better soon as well as Nathan. How scary about the earthquake - glad you didn't feel it!! I fully understand your needing a break, journalling and reading can take quite a bit of time. There are times I feel overwhelmed when I see how many alerts I have. Take care and I look forward to seeing your entries when you have a chance.
xx
Lisa
Hi Jeannette, good to see you back again! :-)
Oh what an awful to-do over Jack, I would have been frantic too. I felt the earthquake - my bed moved backwards and forwards and the bedroom door, which was open, banged against my bedside table. I found it very spooky at the time as I could not figure out what was happening, I didn't know we suffered earthquakes here!
Hope Mike is soon bright eyed and bushy tailed :-D
Love your pic Jeannette, very bright and pretty.
all the best
Freda
Hope it all `comes good' for Mike. Bit of a purple patch for you, Jeannette, but so relieved to hear that Jack is safe and sound
Love,
Bunny xx
I'm glad your okay!
Missie
Hope Mike gets good results from his tests Jeannette .I felt the earthquake but thought it was a dream !!!!
How awful to think Jack had gone missing ,thank goodness you found him safe and sound . Take care of yourself and Mike ........Love Jeanxx...Happy Mothers Day for Sunday .
Lovely entry Jeanette. I do know how you feel. Things havent been right for me and I have not been able to return to my journal, but occasionally look up my favorites, thats all I can manage at the m oment. I enjoyed your entry very much and was horrified to hear about Jack. Its so awful when you can'not find your pet. I am so glad you managed to find him. Hope that Mike gets better soon. Kathie.
Good to hear you are okay and were just taking a break. I will surely pray for Mike. I hope nothing is serious. I am here for you if you need to talk - only an email away. Your readers will be here no matter how often you post, honey. Hug your boys and furry babies for me! Love, Val xox

Good to hear from you, Jeannette. It is sometimes better to take a step back. J-land is a great community, but can take over your life.
Glad you found Jack. The alerts do get overwhelming at times don't they,
Julie
Oh wow, that was really a scare for Jack and all of you. I really hope Mike gets well soon and your grandson over his chicken pox!! Love, Shelly
Lovely to hear from you Jeannette, I hope the rest has done you good. I`m sorry to hear that Mike has been so unwell and I hope he is much better very soon, please give him my love. I hope Daniel and Nathan are much better after their chicken pox, thats one less childhood illness to worry about. I`m so glad that Jack was found, I know from experience how worrying it is when a much loved dog goes missing, a few hours seem like an eternity. Hope you liked the CD. :o)
Love Sandra xxxx
PS: Apparently the earth did move here last night but I slept through it...lol! :o)
Love Sandra xxxx
Jeannette THANK YOU my dear friend. I know how you feel about being overwelmed with the computer. I am there right now. I Wish you a Happy Mothers Day there in England.
Much love to you
Sunny
I've minimized my alerts list lately....I am just so tired and unmotivated any more....bleh...
~Amy
Oh I know it can overwhelm you, my hubby laughs at me for having so many emails...he gets upset if he has four..lol. Glad you found Jack, poor thing must of been really scared as were you and Mike. Take a vacation for a while, pop in every so often that we know you are okay...rest...love, Sandi
Wow... an earthquake! Big doings... I am glad to hear you are well... breaks are good. You are always in my prayers...
be well,
Dawn
im glad i live where i live i havent had any earth quakes, tornados or anything..everything seems to miss philly.
It has been so lovely catching up on all that has been going on in your neck of the woods. I think that you are right to take a wee while away from being forever on the computer. I only get on in the evenings when Mary goes home so that is good. I am trying not to get to involved in to many journals...thats hard though...Look after one another and pop in when ever you feel you can much Love Sybil xx
Jeannette, I missed you. Glad Jack was found the poor dog. Sorry Mike is not feeling well. You take care of yourself because it is obvious you have to take care of them.
Isn't it awful how the internet and journal can cause us to spend so much time onlinv? First I had chatrooms then message boards and mpw jpurnals. I spend over five hours every day and I have a lot of time at 77 years of age. I swear this summer I intend to spend more time on the golf course. Have to go through my alerts and weed them out.
Wish more of the journalers would limit themselves to once a week. If they would do that i could cut down to three hours.
Take care and don't push yourself trying to make too many entries on your journal. Good luck, Bill
Jeannette.............
That was so strange...... I was only thinking about you last night. I was wondering what had happened to you as i had not received any alerts.
Well we felt the earthquake, or rather my daughter did. She stayed with my grandson and they were in my bed, i had the couch. She came down about 1am asking what the noise outside was, i didnt hear anything. She said the dressing table mirrors went banging, the clothes hanging up were moving and the bed was shaking. I said i didnt hear anything, then i suddenly remembered i had left the washing machine on when i laid down so said it must have been that. We looked on the tv but could not see anything....she then came back down at 2am and told me there had been an earthquake, funnily enough there was nothing on tv apart from on CNN. I am glad that no one was badly injured.
Sorry to hear that Mike has not been feeling too good, also that Nathan caught the chicken pox.
Awwwww poor Jack....bless his cotton socks, just glad he was found safe and sound.
Take care
hugs Jayne
I know what you mean about making entries Jeannette. You have been doing it for such a lot longer than me. I have been journalling three years now and I have had to cut back so that I can have a life awawy from the computer. I have enjoyed visiting lots of journals as well. Its the sitting for so long that's the killer.
I hope you come back refreshed. take care and stay well.
Hugs
Jeanie xxxx
(((((((((((((JEANNETTE))))))))))))))))Its good to hear from you. Will keep you and your Husband and Nathan in my prayers.
Thank you for checking in and letting us know how things are going. Glad the earthquake didn't affect you guys. And I'm so glad you found Jack!
Lori
glad you guys are ok:) so glad you found Jack safe and sound:) have a great Thursday
Deb
Thanks for the update Jeannette, I wondered how you all were. I hope Mike 's test results come back OK, I wish him better, Nathan and Daniel too. What an awful experience for poor Jack! Our old dog went missing for three weeks, he'd been found by a railway worker walking on a line. He took him home and looked after him very well for three weeks...while we were visiting police stations, vets and even the Battersea Dog's Home! He'd been found well away from our house and the man had reported him missing at a different police station, he asked the police if he could look after him until he was claimed. We still talk about Mac's little 'holiday'! Love, Pat x
I hope Nathan gets better soon. I'm the same with journals, I just can't keep up a full time job, run a home and comment on all journals too ~ impossible! I'm so glad you found Jack, he must have been terrified. My two border collies were terrified of loud bangs, if they heard a gun go off when I was over the fields with them they'd turn tail and run home at full speed leaving me to walk home alone. I knew I'd find them cowering on the doorstep! I hope Mike's test results come through OK for him. I'm off to Florida on Saturday, see you when I get back! Jeannette xx
so many bugs going around, ty had a reaction to his mmr jabs and got the measles rash, but according to the doctor, did not have measles, blesshim.hope you are all bearing up now, couldnt comment for a while again, had the strange password thing going on, grrr! beckie x
Jeanette nice seeing you on-line dear - you are missed, but sure understand your need for a break dear. Glad you weren't affected by the earthquake. Know you are glad to have Jack back home and safe. Hope Mike keeps feeling better and you get good results from the hospital on him. Sorry to hear about the water damage, didn't need that did you. Take care...Arlene (AJ)
I'm glad you didn't get any earthquake damage. Those can be so scary! Glad Jack was found. What a nightmare for all of you!
Take care..
Pam
So glad you didn't feel the earthquake. I used to hate going through them when we lived in L.A. county. We went through too many to count.
Poor, poor Jack. How freightened he must have been. I'm so glad you all found him as soon as you did and that he is now enjoying running in the field again @ night.
It was indeed a sad day when I read of Rene's passing. She was such a beautiful soul She will be missed.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Tia
In the same vein I find I cant quite unravel myself from this chair. But I'm not journaling I'm saving the universe with these new kewl games lol. CATHY
Glad to know you Mike is on the mend!! I've been busy elsewhere myself. Just so you are happy, that's what matters. ;o) Poor babies with chicken pox. Bubba came down with them the last day of kindergarten. Bug has had the vaccination, so she might avoid them. I have never had them myself. Even after nursing Bubba through them. - Barbara
I think we need spring.
Sounds as though you've been incredibly busy over the last decade - time to have a break, as you say. I used to do some family history research - got back a couple of centuries, but couldn't get any farther back, because relevant parish registers and BTs were lost or faded and unreadable! David.
happy Mothers day!
Lyn
A very happy Mother's Day to all UK Moms out there. Ours isn't until May. I hope Mike gets well quickly. And our love to the boys. Chicken pox are nasty to deal with, but at least they won't come back again. And I can appreciate your difficulty with your sun-lounge. We have a sun porch, which I am assuming is the same type of structure. It's a wooden affair with tons of jealousy windows, and it is also about 40 years old. Ours definitely needs to be replaced. Do what you have to do. We'll be here when you turn your alerts on again.

Re: journaling/commenting - take your time and enjoy yourself :)
I'm glad you found your pet, as one of my biggest fears is losing one of mine.
About the earthquake: I'm not surprised you didn't feel it. It seems like I'm always missing events like that. Last year a local factory had a gas leak and exploded. This was only a mile or two from my house, and while I saw the flames and the smoke I swear I never felt or heard the explosion. This, despite the fact folks 30 miles away reported it to the police.
Dan
Hi Jeannette....I think a lot of us spend too much time on the PC. LOL So glad Jack is ok. That was scary. Our fur babies are special. Hope you are doing well.
Sonya
Stopping in to say hello and hope that you had a good day Jeannette.
Blessings,
Lori
Hi Jeanette hope Mike get well soon and that you are having a well earned rest. Take good care of both of you Kathie.
Glad you found the problem and had it seen to, there's no excuse however for that kind of shoddy treatment. File it away as "lesson learned" and don't dwell on it, you'll never get satisfaction as morons are loathe to admit what they are. Beautiful pix btw. Isn't EAP's life and death haunting? Esp his unnatural fear of being buried alive. He did so much to insure that wouldn't happen, like his custom-made coffin. Yet he died far from home anyway - can't orchestrate everything I guess. Especially death. CATHY

I know how you feel. I have been on a longgggg hiatus.. welll mostly because I didn't have a connection but I believe it was a good thing, a blessing. I am fully back online now but all my alerts are still off so I am just catching up where I can.
hope all is going well with you and yours
Much Love,
Mary
