Confused? - You Will Be!

What a strange language English is.  Need some proof?  Here you go then....

Can you read these correctly the first time?

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse .

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row .

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A sewer fell down into a sewer pipe.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why don't  preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.  That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

They say that this week will be even hotter than last and temperatures may well top 100 degrees by Wednesday.  I think I shall do the reverse of most creatures and hibernate until the colder  weather comes.  Try to stay cool and please remember baby Daniel attending hospital for tests tomorrow.  Never nice, but much worse in this heat.

Have a good week, dear readers.

I have thought about the different meanings to words spelled alike a lot and If we were not raised to know all this then it would be a very hard language to learn.
Praying for little Daniel . Hugs, Helen

Confusing isn't it? Several times when I write something I look at it & think noo that can't be right, but it is. Weird how several things spelled the same or pronounced the same can have different meanings.
Prayers for Daniel for his tests outcome.
Hugs, Sugar

Thank you for the mind stimulant today - I think I must have needed it !  A week ago we were close to that 100 degree mark.  Today it's in the lower 80's which is just about perfect for summertime.  Your Daniel will be in my prayers, as will all of you.  May our dear Lord bless Daniel with healing and good health and comfort the family and guide the doctors. Try to keep cool and be sure to drink plenty of fluids .  'On Ya' - ma

Hahahaha! Yes, English is such a strange language. I remember when I lived in Hong Kong and made friends with a lot of people from UK. Sometimes they have to contend with my Huh? because somethings are called differently in UK. I have since added flats, queue (sp?), loo and such to my vocabulary.  Glad to hear from you again, my dear.

Wow cute!  Yes English is a strange language.  They say it is actually one of the hardest.  But would you believe I read all of those sentences easily and correctly the first time!!!  I may type redneck, but I actually have a very high IQ in relation to words.  Do hope you and yours are getting on better.  Keep us posted on Daniel!  - Barbara

That was so much fun.  Very interesting, too.  I'm going to print it to show Mika to get her reaction.  I will be saying special prayers for Daniel tonight.  Hope all goes well for him.

The English Language is a very strange and complicated thing to understand. I have been in the Top Set for English Language (and Litrature, these last two) and I never understood why because I found English difficult...

Nice to hear from you Jeanette, it's been a while, but you're back now with a fun entry! Hope you and your family are okay, and Baby Daniel shall be in our thoughts as he goes for tests today...

Take care,
Leigh :-)

You are so right.  This is one confusing language, even for those of us who are raised with it.  I feel sorry for the ones who have to learn it as a second language !   Hope all is well with Daniel ... prayers coming his way !  Tina

Language can seem idiosyncratic at times.    I have been reading so much more the last several years and it has improved the way I think tremendously.    I am learning more about the world and history which makes my place in it more defined.    I know your love for writing and I wish that I had your talent!    mark
