A Sad Day in J-Land

Well, I have at last been able to access my journal by going in through Internet Explorer.  As if I do not spend enough time on here without having to go through Explorer and put in my screen-name and password. Those of you who are unable to post for the same reason - the SAVE button does not work, trying going in through Explorer.  Put in your journal address, when you get to your journal you will have to go to sign-in and put in your aol screen-name and password.  Then you will be able to write your entry and save as normal.

What a sad day it is in J-Land.  So many are moving their journals, so many leaving AOL.  I can understand their feelings.  In my own personal opinion, advertisements have no place on journals.  Yes, the space belongs to AOL but journals are private things. Each journal is a part of someone. People write about traumatic experiences, their illnesses, broken relationships and even more personal things.  This is a place where we have been able to write our journal and read other journals in peace without the annoyance of adverts.  I can understand it when people say they feel "invaded" or even "raped."

Journals UK is different to American journals but I cannot help but feel that this change is heading our way. When they make changes to American journals it inevitably filters through.

Aol must make a hefty profit out of our monthly subscriptions and why they feel the need to do this is beyond me.  Even Patrick, who recently ran the Vivi awards, has taken his journal elsewhere.  Many are protesting.  Will it make any difference?  I doubt it.  When did the big corporations ever listen to the little people?

Aol should remember the loyalty of its users, many of us have been here for years.  They should also remember that there are many other providers out there who are cheaper.  I certainly do not want my journal decorated with adds that I have no say in and no option but to carry.  We do not visit journals because we want to read ads. It is as simple as that.

There are probably those of you who disagree with me but this is my view and I have every right to think theway I do.  I repeat, advertisements have no place on journals.

Well, the decorating is going well and we are now starting on the spare bedroom.  The whole place is looking so much brighter.  I am still awaiting my net curtains. I shall be so happy when they come so thatI will see something new at my windows.

We had the family over all yesterday afternoon which gave us a nice break.  The boys are thriving and getting bigger each time that we see them.

I hope the SAVE button on journals will be working again soon.

To all of those journallers that have left, we are sorry to see you go, some of you are friends of mine.  But I do understand and share your feelings. Sometimes, even if it changes nothing in the long run, you have to make a stand.  I wish you all well.  If ads appear on my journal, I may well be joining you.

Oh well, back to the painting.

Jeannette, I so love the graphic.  So glad your decorating is going well.  I so love my new blinds.  Am going to get them for the rest of the house as well.   I hope AOL gets their stuff together before long, this has been a most aggravating time.  I really love my journal and would hate to leave and have so many of my friends leave.  Have fun painting and when you get done, you and hubby can come my way and help me with the basement. :)

Blessings!~

My journal is not able to save.   This was as of yesterday.   Good to read your decorating is going well.   Since Sunday I have been having to lay down on my board and read.  Was on my feet for 7 days a week for a month working on the construction, up and down the ladder.  Much strenght in my legs now since my knee replacements.  Today the weather has changed to cold and my back is tolerable, so I must continue the work on the home construction.  Electrician is coming today.   Have to leave the computer and start the work again after a 3 day resting time due to my arthritis.   Will see the Doctor in December about the shoulder lump removal.  Had to wait because of the biopsy that was taken twice on a pre-cancerous mole removal from the same area.   Was told the mole was removed just in time, and no skin cancer is present.    Take care and have a good day,    mark

I am torn about the whole thing...I haven't tried to post to my journal since all this went down, but I have heard from many of my friends that they are either unable to get to the "add entry" button, or the "save" button is not working...I am going to sit and wait it out a bit before I decide which way to go.  JAE

I totally agree with you Jeannette,  I don`t see why AOL doesn`t want to keep the journallers happy, I mean, they didn`t realise it was going to be such a success.  And who made it a success?  We did, why can`t they see that without us, there ads are of little value.  There are many other journal sites we could go too that won`t cost a penny to use either...Now there`s a thought!  Thanks for the advice re: explorer, I try that tomorrow as I don`t have time today.  I thought thatfailing that, we could post our entries via email, and if people want to comment they can reply.

I'm so glad you were able to make an entry.  Change always  is hard on people, but after a while the storm will die down.  I've had a blog spot journal as well as my aol journal and I can tell you the blog spot is not half as nice and it has it's gliche days too !  They have an option to allow adds on your site and you'll get paid for each click on their ads.  Maybe I should look into it??? Aol charges us to have ads, blogspot will pay us...what a crazy world.  Personally I'm not in this for the money.  Sounds like your house will be beautiful!  I am envious.  Have a good day!  'On Ya' - ma

I think I shall probably join them as well but who knows............I can see their point!!  I'm not entirely sure whether leaving is the answer but like you said I should imagine the ads will just continue!!  Glad the decorating is going okay

I don't think leaving AOL is the answer.
I think that if enough gripe and complain that we can get things changed.
Editor Joe is doing a pretty good job keeping us updated (as well as John over at By The Way) He even gives us an email address to send our thoughts about the journal changes to.
If you have never been there here is his journal address:

http://journals.aol.com/journalseditor/magicsmoke

and John's is here:  (he also works for aol)

I think that whatever affects one country's version of aol journals will show up world wide sooner or later.

I havent posted an entry in my journal since the weekend so have no idea about the save button. One thing i do know is the ad at the top is a bit OTT.I don't think leaving AOL is recommended.I have left aol twice in the past.first i went to freeserve then came back to aol then went to bt openworld then came back to aol where i think i'm gunna stop.I know sometimes it can be a pain in the Ass but most of the time it's not too bad.I for one would miss you Jeanette and i think a lot more would agree with me on that one.Am sure the probs won't be long lasting.Hang on in there.

Jeannette I agree with you ads have no place in personal journals. Sunny

Glad all is well with you.  I don't blame those who left J-land one bit.  I see you have a "toolbar" at the top of yours now.  My main concern is that they don't put anything in a banner on my journal that would be in direct opposition to my Christian beliefs.  If they think they just have to do this, why can't they send out an e-mail list to chose from?!  I have "advertised" AOL school in the past and would proudly do so again.  Guess I'm staying unless things get worse, but I do plan on making my views known to them.  Oh, well.....nothing stays the same.  -  Barbara

Your all so lucky, I've been going through Internet Explorer, signing in and posting every since we got back from our trip to New Mexico in September.  Something happened to my AOL software but there is always a way.  Now that I have DSL it would be nice if I could just get right in but I thought it was just me and my problem.  I too feel sad that so many are cashing out.  I'm not that crazy about the other journals, but then of course I'm not that familiar with them either.  I like posting my photographs to go along with my post and I don't see that in the other journals.  The photos seem to be seperate.  Maybe we should just count our blessings and bite the bullet and just see if the powers that be realize they are exploting us and change things.

I haven't even tried to post an entry.  Maybe Friday on my day off.  It's sad to see that so many people are having problems.

(I hope that as you do this, you continue to send your feedback to the feedback address we've set up, JournalChanges@aol.com, which I can't stress enough is not a dumping ground for your e-mails -- it's set up because I don't know if any high-powered AOL executives are going to see the comments you post in my blog, whereas with the e-mail, we can collect your feedback directly and share it with our executive team.) your voice does count so tell them how you feel

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU THE ADVERTISEMENTS DRIVE ME CRAZY ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU COME ON LINE START TO READ AOL FRONT PAGE AND YOU GET E-BAY ADVERTS ETC FLASHING ACROSS. I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHETHER WE WANT THESE COMING. IN MY OPINION A SIMILAR SYSTEM USED  FOR SPAM AT LEAST THEN ITS OUT CHOICE. WE HAVE NONE OTHER THAN MAKING MORE MONEY FOR AOL. ON THE OTHER HAND IF YOU TAKE ON YOU WANT THE ADVERTS YOU GET AOL DISCOUNT - HEY I AM A DREAMER LOL. LOVE THE CURE FOR AOL TAG

Today I seem to be advertising Kodak.  I do agree it is an invasion.  I'll bet AOL won't do anything until they see people shutting off their AOL.  Linda
