Monday Mumblings (second attempt due to AOL)

The village of Stock in Essex is a delightful place with its duckpond, its village green and its pubs.  Only the ever increasing traffic is doing anything to mar it.

The Bear pub has stood for four hundred years and has changed little of its interior.  Oak beams, low ceilings and open fireplaces. where the flames crackle in winter warming  the drinkers.  It is these fireplaces and chimneys that hold a story, a story retold by generations, a story that is hung on the pub wall for all to read

Charlie Wilson was the Ostler , one who works in the stables looking after the horses, at this old inn during the closing years of the 19th century. He was a small man and had a peculiar sideways walk, something like a crab. This strange gait earned him the nickname “Spider”. Spider had a particular party piece. He had the peculiar habit, when drunk, of crawling up the tap-room chimney and emerging, soot covered, from the fireplace of the next bar. One Christmas Eve, he climbed the tap-room chimney as usual but never emerged again. He apparently decided not to come down and just sat in a bacon curing loft at the junction of the two chimneys. It could be that Spider was taken ill or had maybe died up there but nobody knows. All pleas from the Landlord and the other customer failed. Exasperated at his not answering they lit a small fire in the grate to try and drive him out. As nothing happened they assumed that the smoke had suffocated old “Spider”. It is said they never retrieved him and his well cured remains are supposedly still up there today! His ghost, though, often descends at night. Dressed in white breeches and shiny leather boots, he does no harm, and is content to flit about the nooks and shadowy recesses of this timeless and little changed old inn. Many people have seen him, often sitting in a chair by the fire or sometimes glimpsed as a fleeting shadow from the corner of the eye.

Mike and I have visited the Bear on several occasions and it certainly does have an atmosphere about it.

Well, another gloomy and dismal day today. When will the weather improve?  It is a sobering thought that we are nearly into May and once that comes it is only four months until Autumn again.  Roll on some sunshine.    It is so quiet around here even for a Monday. No people and hardly any cars. It seems as if everyone has hibernated.

I have ordered some plants and hope they arrive this week.  One of them is a tree for our front garden to replace the one that died last year. I so long to look out of my bedroom window and see a tree.  As long as the rain keeps off so that we can get them in I shall be happy.

Before I go here are the latest pictures of Jack. He is almost four months old now.  It seems like only yesterday he was just a tiny scrap, now he is all legs and growing apace.

Wishing you a happy week, dear readers.

Oh what a sad story of Charlie Wilson. We don't have stories like that around here much because all our buildings are new in comparison,,,  You should just see the nice buildings they tear down to make room for new and bigger ones ... its a shame. Jack is really growing isn't he... He sure is a beautiful dog too. Hope the sun starts shinning for you and you get your tree planted .... don't forget pictures of your garden too.... :)  Sandra

HI JEANNETTE.
LOVED THE STORY ABOUT SPIDER UP THE CHIMNEY.
I HAVE HAD A MEAL IN A PUB IN STOCK BUT IT WAS NOT CALLED THE BEAR. THE FOOD WAS GOOD. IT WAS VERY DARK WITH JUST ENOUGH LIGHT TO SEE WHAT YOU WERE EATING.

Hi Jeannette,   What a great story.  I wonder why they didn`t retrieve Spider`s remains though, poor man.  Luckily for me AOL seemed to have resolved it`s problems by the time I came online. I hear that you and quite a few others had lots of problems though, it seems to be happening far too often of late.  Jack is becoming a handsome young dog now that he is growing out of his puppyish looks.  He is a little sweetheart though. :o)

Loved the story about the pub at Stock. The second photo of Jack has got me wondering - I'm a nosey beggar - it looks as though he's sitting on a rabbit hutch. Do you keep rabbits, if so would love to see a pic or two? Take care.

I love the story about Spider and the Bear Pub.  We don't have any good tales like that here in California.  I would love to stop by that quaint place someday and check it out.   Your Jack is a handsome pup.  His breed is the smartest there is.  I watched the agility championships on television last night and most of the dogs were Borders or Aussies having the time of their lives.
Hope you post more of Jack as he grows.

Love the story, we live near a pub that had a chair with a curse attached to it. My hubbys friend used to live there, the chair was given to a museum on the understanding it must be locked away and never sat on. Jack is so lovely, I really miss my dog when I see photos of him.

What a neat story on Spider.  Jack is adorable!  We were gloomy gray here today with just a faint bit of sun showing every once in awhile.  Hopefully clear skies for you soon!  My niece is heading to London mid-May for 8 or 10 weeks.

Thanks for sharing the story of the Bear Pub.  I love English history, so this was a fun read for me.
So.... still having gloomy weather?  We are here, too, which is unusual for this time of year.  Lots of rain this year.  I'm awfully tired of it ... I want to see the sun !   Tina

Jack is getting bigger and is becoming his own dog and not a puppy seperated from his mother anymore.    I was glad when Salty got past his puppy stage so that he can be left in the cabin when I am away and is a perfect dog.   He is incredibly strong now and will not let me clip his nails.   I have to have the Veterinarian do that with someone to hold him and I can hear his yelps in the back.   I think he realizes that he likes it better with them clipped as he lets me handle his dew claw which was the one that became ingrown once.  If I get the clippers out that is another thing.    In his new pen now he can really let loose and use his muscles as I throw a stick back and forth.    When he has it he keeps it away from me and growls and doesn't want me to take.    He has never barked at a stranger and only wants attention by jumping up on the person or car.   I think that having Nathan to learn to swim at an early age is excellent for him.   I spent at lot of time at the YMCA going thru every level of swimming.    That last stage was at a summer camp where I had to learn all the parts of a small sailboat, and tried to learn how to manoeuvre it with the sail.     mark
