That Pesky Bird and Other Things

It is a good job that we have not even though about removing the wire covers from our pond mainly due to the bad weather, because that pesky bird has been hanging around again.

Over the weekend I spotted him/her sitting at the top of our neighbour's dead apple tree.  I only hope they still have fish in their pond as they had gone away for the weekend and their pond was not covered.  Mike has since warned them.  There are quite a few fish keepers around here so these birds are spoiled for choice.  Also a couple of years ago and only a couple of miles from us, the council decided to start a Heronry.  As if we do not get enough problems with them now!

Mike was quick with the camera and got this shot, just as it was taking off

Pass me a gun somebody lol!

We had a bit of sad news.  A neighbour of ours sadly passed away last Sunday night.  Only ten days previously there had been quite a large article and photograph of him in the local paper when he celebrated his 100th Birthday.  It is nice that he made his century and that he got his card from the Queen and also one from the Houses of Parliament, probably our local m.p.  He was such a nice man, a real gentleman of the old school and Mike and I spent many happy hours with him listening to his memories.  Still, it was a good long life, much longer than most people get and he was suffering badly from Alzheimers.  We will always remember  Guy with affection.

I had one of those freak things happen to me, just when I was getting over the bug.  One of those things that comes out of the blue and cannot be avoided.  I was walking into the bedroom where Jesse was alseep in his basket.  Jesse heard Mike rattle a bowl and he flew like a lunatic, obviously in his excitement, not even seeing me.  He crashed into my leg raising a huge bump and bruise with his hard skull.  The trouble was that Jack was behind me, I was thrown off balance and, not wanting to fall on Jack, I sort of twisted myself badly and hurt my back.  Yesterday I had to spend the entire day in bed with alternate ice pack and a hot water bottle.  It is a little better today but still very painful so I am off to lie down again in a little while.  Cannot blame Jesse, it was just one of those things.  They say most accidents happen in the home.

So, it does not pay for me to make plans.  All the things I wanted to do are simply not getting done and through no fault of my own.  I can only hope I am getting everything out of the way and can then steam ahead and be ready for the nice weather, if it ever comes.

Until the next time........

Postscript   I was very upset to see the news that singer Gene Pitney had passed away during his tour of the U.K.  How sad to die alone in a hotel room so far from his American home.  Who can ever forget "24 Hours From Tulsa"?

I have been a fan of Gene's since longer than I care to remember and hardly a week goes by without my playing his music.  He had a unique voice which was instantly recognisable and brought pleasure to millions.  Another angel sings in heaven today.  Sleep well, Gene and thank you.

Wonderful shot of the heron, pesky things have breakfasted in my pond this morning. Not a fish to be seen!! Will have to restock. Holly will be delighted - she loves going to the pet shop with me. Take care.

Mike took a great shot...looks awesome in flight.  So sad about your friend...what a great age to live to, 100.  Those freak accidents happen here too.  One time my husband bent over to kiss me good bye, I was sitting on the sofa and I leaned up and pulled a chest wall muscle.  All over a kiss! I do hope Jesse's head is okay and your back heals very quickly.  I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday...hugs and much love,
Joyce

Hi Jeannette,  I was so sorry to hear about Gene Pitney, I too have always loved all his songs.  He was no age either, so sad.  On the other end of the scale I`m sorry to hear about your neighbour Guy. The changes he must have seen in his very long life.  Your poor leg, it really must have been quite a bump, the times !I`ve tripped over my dogs aren`t worth counting.  I hope the swelling is starting to go down now and that it`s more comfortable for you.  Great picture of the heron, horrible things that they are.  If I had a gun I`d gladly send you it...lol!  The herons in Canada are even bigger than ours so I`ll bet they eat even more fish!

That is a great picture Mike got. I don't blame you for wanting the gun as that joker has been getting your beautiful fish.
Sorry about your neighbor. He did have a long life.
Sorry about your hurt back. Hope it keeps improving
You know more about Gene Pitney than I do. I can't recall any of his songs. I might recognize some of them if I heard them.
Have a good night. Helen

Sorry about your friend, I have just lost my good friend.Gutted about Gene Pitney, he was always a favourite of mine.
As for the heron, put a decoy/plastic one in the pond as they never visit a pond if another one is there.

I hope your back feels better soon. Aren't you supposed to lie on something hard ? I'm not sure ? Sounds a bit uncomfortable to me, especially if you're in pain already. I was sad to hear about Gene Pitney ~ I remember my parents loving his music as I was growing up. Also, sorry to hear about the loss of your dear neighbour. Great photo of the bird ~ even if they are a pain !!
Wishing you better, hugs ~x Debbie x~

Hi Jeannette

I enjoyed your blog and I loved the pictures.  I too was upset to hear about Gene Pitney - I liked his singing and songs very much.  Thank you for cheering up an old lady.

The photo of the Heron is fantastic.    It is too bad that they feed on people's fish.    People will get the message to screen off their fish ponds and maybe the Herons will give up and find somewhere else that will take their skill instead of "fast food".     I hope your injury heals up and it is good that you didn't have a worse spill if that is any conciliation.    Hopefully it is a strain and just the muscles need to heal with time.    I had an accident on the 3 steps going to my kitchen following knee replacement surgery and had torn open the muscles causing internal bleeding.    I had to be put back in the hospital after several days of agony at home and was given plasma I.V. to heal up the bleeding.    Best wishes,    mark

I do hope ypu can find a way to keep that bird away from your pond.
Sorry I have not been commenting lately but have been reading. Love the pictures!

That is a great picture of the pesky Heron.  I've always admired their grace, but I had not thought they could be a nuisance.  What will you do to keep them away from your fish pond?

I was sad to hear of Gene Pitney's death also.  I, too, liked his voice.  His most memorable song for me is "Town Without Pity."

Glad to see you're over that bug, but sorry to read about wrenching your back.  Some days it seems you can't win, no matter what you do.  Take care.

Hello Jeannette.
I was looking at AOL's home page and it mentioned BLOGS. I had never heard of the word before. Having investigated I was directed to your site. What a wonderful idea. I have not read all of it but enjoyed what I did read.
I would like to start one, but I am far to busy scanning slides and photos to eventually make DVD slide shows of my family, friends and other subjects like holidays. I am also doing the same with Camcorder tapes. My collection of VHS tapes will all be put onto DVD and all my Records and Cassette Tapes on to CD's.
I hope I live long enough to complete this task as I am fast approaching 73.

Regards Dan.

Sorry you've had accidents and illness Jeannette, hoping from now on everything will go more smoothly.  That's a fantastic shot of the pesky bird, well done Mick. Keep well. Rache

Hi Jeannette. I would be really interested to hear about your elderly neighbour's life, written from your chats with him. I remember you used to write terrific local history stuff, and would love to read some more.
Please read my blog at www.josayoung.co.uk

I hadn't heard about Gene Pitney.  He was a very talented man, and will be missed.  I'm so sorry to hear about your back.  Nothing is worse than back pain.  I feel for you ... take care of yourself and get to feeling better.  Why is it that these things always happen when we have so much that we want to do?  Well, I guess there really is no good time for it.  Anyway, you pamper yourself... You deserve it !  Tina

We have a man who decided hawks were becoming extinct in our area and he started a habitat very near our house to protect them and raise them.  Now there are hawks out the yang-yang and they always try to get our son's cat when we let him out.  Since they are protected, we cannot shoot them.

So sorry about your back.  Hope you are feeling better!

Sorry about the loss of your friend.  We have a good friend like that in Palmer Lake, CO.  We used to spend hours listening to Lyman talk of his memories also.  It was very interesting.  He made history come alive and I am a history buff.

As far as celebrity deaths, we have lost some good ones this past year.  So sad........

Hope things get better for you soon!

Blessings!~
Susan
