Local Views - Photo Entry

Photobucket

Today it is blowing an absolute gale.  I was reading the paper this morning and there was an article about the weather saying that this was a tradition British summer and that people are only moaning because we have been accustomed to hot summers the last few years and have forgotten what summers used to be like here.  I beg to disagree.  Yes, we did have cool wet summers but we never had the high winds that we are experiencing now in days gone by. The trees are almost bending double.

I have some local views to share with you today taken by him indoors on his daily jaunt out with the dogs.

Photobucket

This is an old mill where in days gone by huge barges powered by sail would moor up to unload their cargo of grain.  It is now a highly popular antiques centre.

The small weir just across from the antiques centre.

I love the way the plants are growing in the above picture and the algae on the old brickwork.  This place has changed little over the centuries.  The only alteration is that now  it is a place where people live on converted barges and houseboats and  no longer a place of industry.

I do wish many more of our local historic buildings had been protected and saved but then time moves on, things are constantly changing and what is new today will one day be old, if the structures have been built well enough.

I am happy that this ancient backwater you have seen remains little altered.

The mill looks so much like the working one not too far from where I live.  I love Britain for it's fresh beauty.  Wouldn't want to live anywhere else :-D
Pat on the back to Mike for his lovely photos!

Over here I used to think about England imagining tall buildings, jammed together, narrow winding streets...maybe more like London. But your pictures have shown me a beautiful side of your country...just lovely. Thank you...love, Sandi

Jeannette, the pictures are so lovely!  Makes me wish I could visit there and take a little tour.  I'm sorry about the windy, nasty weather.  It is a little gloomy here today as well.  Blessings and love, Penny http://journals.aol.com/firestormkids04/FromHeretoThere

Great pictures..I especially love the "old mill" picture.   We're having another hot week here.  It's predicted we'll be up in the 90's by the weekend.  Linda in WA

It does seem as though the older buildings were built to last longer.  I love to see them being taken care of and used too.  We have an old mill site here in our town, but all that remains is the foundation.  Thanks for sharing the lovely pictures.  So sorry your weather is not summer like at all.  We have had cool nights but warm days and signs of fall are all around.  I saw some cat tails along the roadside coming home.  'On Ya' - ma

I have to agree with you about the weather Jeannette. It certainly has changed but we dont normally have the winds that we had recently. I can remember years ago when we used to go to school .... from leaving the house to walking to the bottom of the road it was that warm that you would need to remove your cardigan, you then had 6 weeks of sunshine while we were on school holidays.......... oh how time has changed. Nowdays you are lucky if you make it through the day without having to change your clothes or grab an umbrella. Worrrying really

Love the photos

It had been unusually cool for the beginning of August here in S. Illinois.    It made for some enjoyable working weather compared to last years near 100 F heat.     Now after no rain for some time, it finally rained Thur. and Fri.     It was so hot and humid yesterday.   Today is overcast and I have been resting and have not been out since this morning to take Salty out briefly.    The photo of the old building is magnificent.    What life must have been like in those days.   We are the same people, just living under different circumstances.    One of the oldest building in the U.S. has wood measured to be 300 years old.    I am facinated by all architecture.    Having old painting's depicting the daily events and dress of people is a great record to look at.    I always enjoy seeing photo's of your surroundings.     mark

Am I right in thinking you live close to the Thames Estuary Jeannette?  I love the little waterways and the mill, they look so very English. :o)
