Alas, Poor Pier

It was only a short time ago that I took you all on a little tour of Southend and posted photographs of the longest pier in the world.

Once more, it is has blazed.  The fire is believed to have started in a fish and chip shop.  Fireman were hampered in fighting the fire as they could not take fire appliances down the pier and the tide was out thus making access to water difficult.  Flames were leaping 30-40 feet into the air and roughly 130 feet of the pier has been totally destroyed.

Picture taken from aol. news page.

It is sad because it is such a nice place to visit but , thankfully, no lives were lost.  It was at first thought that some fishermen could have perished but they are safe and well.

Have you noticed that on your recent entries column it has everything dated 10/10 9/10 8/10 etc.  as if you only posted once a month and always on the 10th!  Thats odd.  Linda

It's sad when places are destroyed like that.  I felt the same when the hurricane wiped out a lot of NewOrleans this summer.  I had just visited there the summer before with my DS#2 and family.  It is a blessing that no one was hurt. 'On Ya'-ma

Oh Jeannette, this is so sad.  This is the pier that you sent in a postcard to John.  We remember because we were so impressed that it was the longest pier in the world.  This is so very sad.

It' so sad when fire or a natural disaster destroys a landmark.  We've lost several places in our area that remain only in our memories.  I'm glad no people were hurt.
