As soon as he heard the news of the fire, my beloved could not wait to get down there with his camera. It is a very warm Autumn day here and the crowds flocked, not often we have a fairly big news story break in this area. The police had everything cordoned off. People were not allowed in the observation tower (which is the other side of the road to the pier). Not much to be seen of the actual damage but there is a haze of smoke over the far end of the pier where the damage occured.
Plenty of fire appliances still around
Very difficult to fight a fire at the end of a pier 1.34 miles long and no vehicular access! They had to run hoses all the way down. The pier does have its own pumps in case of fire but they rely on sea water and the tide was out.
The t.v. vans were out in force
Our local papers will be full of it and it will also be featured on the news. Unfortunately Mike could not get anywhere near John Francis, a well-known t.v. presenter.
Still, he has managed to catch a piece of history. It has certainly brought crowds of people flocking and the local traders will , no doubt, be rubbing their hands.
One unexpected onlooker seemed to take it all in his stride:-
Wonder what he made of it all? The council has assured everyone that the pier will be rebuilt. Going to take some time though.

What a nightmare for the fire brigade...not being able to get closer..great pictures Mike has taken....And I wonder what Mr. Owl thought about the goins on !!!!!!!!!!Ally
THat is so odd. A fire on a pier. Good pictures Mike took. Your font look ok to me. Maybe a 12. Someone was complaining about their font yesterday. Helen
Good morning Jeannette,
I just read the previous entry about the pier...and now seeing the photos in this entry. That is one long pier....I hope they can save it...I am sure they are trained and have had emergency plans in the works for just this scenario. Hope it all works out for the BETTER! Take care and keep us posted. Weather here is sun/about 70 or so. A nice day...so far.
Hugs,
Joyce
Well done ,imagine having our own journals photographer,we saw it here first be fore Anglia TV Thanks Mike Jan xx
Just read your journal..great photos. Such a shame about the pier..many years ago I had a great Xmas in Southend with a friend from the town..wonder if she is still there? We walked along the pier on a cold and breezy Boxing day. When Southend or the pier are mentioned I always remember that hol.

I really enjoyed the pics. We had a wonderful 'horseshoe' pier that caught fire. All the wonderful places of my youth were destroyed. The city rebuilt the pier, but in a totally different pattern and the great seafood restaurants that had once lived on it were never replaced. Guesds it was called progress, but it makes me sad to go on it now. Pennie
Beautiful owl! So sorry about the pier. They can be such wonderful places, I hear.
Jim has just said that the owl must have done it! Then I read the comments and saw that it had already been said...The plot thickens! Seriously though, I`m glad to hear that the pier will be rebuilt. I would think as it is a famous pier that they will not be too long about it. How unusual for an owl to be out and about in the daytime. :-)

So sad about the pier and the last I heard they thought arson which is double grr. They will rebuilt but it's the charm that gets lost a little, hope they put photo's up of how it was orignally when it is restored. Can't get over the owl, he's gorgous, he has a wise expression on his face. Mick takes great pics. Rache xx
It's still a real shame, hope they can retain the character

Maybe when they re-build the pier they will re-think the fire control measures. Also, how did Him Indoors get so close to the owl? Does he have a zoom lens? Linda
What a fantastic picture of the owl!! Thanks for sharing those pics :-)
