When I told the story of my Great-Grandfather and his mysterious death, I mentioned that I had a photo of some of his children. The photograph is not good quality although we had it enhanced by a professional. The original is so poor that he did what he could. Anyway, I am sharing it with you today.
Going by the approximate age of the boy, this picture must either have been taken in 1892 or 1893. From left to right they are my Grandmother Mary, long time readers will know I did a complete series of postings about her and her house quite early on in my journal. Next to her at the back is Margaret (she is the daughter that attended the inquest). Margaret returned to live in Scotland. I have no name of the man she married but I know she had a son George because I met him once when I was about twelve. I have not been able to trace the family. On the right is the eldest daughter Jessie, she was the one who sadly died at the age of sixteen. She is holding baby Lilias. Lilias became a seamstress and married an omnibus driver who had a very similar surname to her own. They had several children. I used to visit her in Kensington where she and her husband lived in a basement flat and all you could see from the window was legs walking past. Unfortunately she developed a liking for drink as her father had done. The boy is Hermon who was named after his father, my Great-Grandfather. I managed to track Hermon up until 1921, I have a record of his marriage and the birth of four children, then he disappears. I think he also returned to Scotland. I do know that he was a ship's steward.
The two other children had not yet been born, they were Andrew and Ellen. Andrew was to die at 35 years of age from tuberculosis a very short time after his only child, a five year old boy also named Hermon after his grandfather, had succumbed to the same disease. Ellen as I mentioned in the previous entry was brain damaged and spent her life in institutions although she did take holidays with her family. She was very sweet and very childlike and I loved her, everybody did.
Whilst I was getting out the above photograph, I came across an envelope with assorted odd photos in it. My mother had cut the photo into a strange shape for some reason, maybe she intended to put it in her locket but never got around to it. I played about with it and got a reasonable print. I had not seen it in years and it brought back happy memories. It is a tiny photo and I had to enlarge it so the quality is not wonderful. This must have been one of our last holidays there, then we started going to the Isle of Wight.
It is myself and my Mother taken at Walton-On-The Naze where many of my childhood holidays were spent. I was twelve at the time. The little dog was a red Pekingese. We called him Chuey although his pedigree name was Yun Chu of....... etc. etc. He lived to be seventeen.
I also came across a photo of Becky when a teenager but she would certainly tell me off if I posted it here. It was the days of "big hair" and she also had a brace on her teeth. Lovely to find it though.
Talking of Becky, she Dean and the boys are away in Skegness at the moment at a holiday camp. They chose it because there is so much for the children to do. She phoned me yesterday and told me that Nathan is always the first one on the stage dancing to the music. That's our boy! They have been doing a lot of swimming and Daniel even fell asleep in a rubber ring in the swimming pool, bless his heart. We miss not seeing them this week but they will have so much to tell us on their return. Dean has such a stressful job, it is nice for him to get away with the family.
Have a good day everyone.

Love old pictures, sometimes I'll get a box out and just look at them, great memorys, DIANE
I love those old photos! So many people died of TB in those days, my dad had a lot of friends who succumbed to it. The photo of you and your mum is lovely too. It's nice that Becky and Dean have managed to get away for a while, glad the boys are enjoying themselves too! Jeannette xx
Really enjoyed the pictures and the family info. We had a Pekingese when I was little. Her name was Waddles, because she waddled when she walked. A mean little bad tempered things that would try to bite me when I went to pet her. Except for times of thunderstorms. Then she was so loving! LOL - Barbara
My jaw hit the floor when I looked at the very old picture of your family. SUCH a family resemblance to you! I know you probably don't see it. I sure do, though!

The picture of you and your Mother is good. You both looked very happy. That was a long time for your Chuey to live. Glad becky and family are having a great time on their holiday. Hugs, Helen
How nice to see these old photos Jeannette. I recognised you straight away, or at least could see a strong resemblance. The old family photo reminds me so much of the one I posted some time ago of my grandad as a young boy with his sister and parents. Why was it that they never smiled in photos back then?

Try not to worry too much about the blood test. As they said, if the Dr was worried about anything he would have had you back in.

How interesting. It's funny how the real old photos all look the same, no matter whose family they are. It must have been the clothes and the way they were posed back in those days. Linda in WA
I love reading about your family and seeing these pictures is very special. It sounds like your daughter's family is having a wonderful vacation. It's good for them to have family time with the boys building memories like you have with your mom.
Hugs, Kathy
That is a great picture of you and your mom...
Can't wait to hear all about the boys adventures when they return...
Have a restful weekend!
Linda :)
It never ceases to amaze me how much joy I can get from an old photo. I've always thought of them as little time machines. What's strange in my case is that I can stille arrange my mind and emotions to whatever it was I felt at the time the picture was taken like a crutch to bolster the memory that might have otherwise been forgotten. You look very happy there, you and your mother both. Thank you for sharing that.
Fred
interesting pictures
Have returned to look at your journal and to read some of your nice writing. When you write about your Scottish relatives, I think of my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother King who both came from Scotland. Nice picture of you and your mother. I do think many of the English journalists write so well. Anyway, I think we have strange affinities to the people whose ancestors came from the same country some of ours did. Of course the majority of my ancestors came from England. I have always wondered about my affinity for German people. Last night Doc and I were talking and he said the Dutch people were of the same strain as some Germans and I said that's it! There's the tie that explains some of your attraction for me. He is of German descent. My grandmother King had Dutch ancestors, and she was a great one for order and cleanliness, very industrious (to a fault). He's also very musical which I love. So it's good to find out who our ancestors were!

My goodness, Jeannette, you look like a pin up model in the picture with you and your mother. Lovely picture and such a beautiful smile and the wind blowing through your hair. Your dog was a sweetie, too. Hope Becky and family did enjoy their trip. I commented on your last entry with the video. I tried to save it three times. The wonders of AOL wouldn't do it. Spooky things scare the daylights out of me. I love to watch them but wouldn't go to that graveyard if they paid me...lol Hope this comments save or I give up. xx Chris
Jeannette you are absolutely beautiful!! And you look very happy there with your mother!! What a lovely entry this is with your family heritage here!!
