Monday Musings

When I was attending for my medical appointments last week, I remembered to slip my camera into my bag and got a few shots of some pretty dwellings in our area.

This is me in the car having left the doctors' surgery

This is the surgery I attend

One of our country lanes

Lastly, a garage on the way to the doctors.  Now, why should I want to put on a picture of a garage?  Well, it is the only garage in the country known to include a war memorial.  Yes, that Willow tree is a war memorial.  When two local men, the Graham brothers, returned from fighting they settled once more on their farm, Francis farm, which was surrounded by land.  Next to the farm they planted the Willow tree in honour of all the men from the area who did not return and a service of dedication was held. The farm and the land are long gone and  houses, shops and the garage stand there now.  As the tree is protected the garage had to incorporate it.  There is a commemorative plaque under the tree and wreaths are laid there on every Remembrance Sunday.  You might just be able to glimpse the plaque in the picture.

I thought we were having a monsoon last Friday.  Rain so hard you could not see down the garden. Poor Becky had to drive home in it as it showed no sign of stopping.  After she left, I was going to have a lie down on the bed and read my book.  By chance, I decided to check the computer first and I am glad I did.  I was sitting here and I could hear water dripping, sounded like it was actually in the room.  I walked around investigating.  Yes, there was certainly water tap, tap, tapping somewhere.   I sent him indoors into the loft and he found water coming in.  A roof tile had cracked out on the roof and there was quite a mess up there in the loft.  Luckily, our neighbour across the road, does house demolitions and has quite a store of things he has saved. Mike went to see him and he had just the tile we needed, same size, colour (well roughly) and make.  When the rain did stop, him indoors was up on the roof replacing the tile.  Typical, it has not rained since so we do not know if the leak is totally cured, but it should be. Fingers crossed.

Watched the new Robin Hood on Saturday night.  I will not bother again.  I feel the BBC has really slipped up this time.  Jane Eyre is great but.......please - this updated Robin Hood does nothing for me.  Supposedly starving peasants who looked like they had been having four square meals a day. Such peasants also with perfectly combed hair, immaculately clean clothes, not a spot or dirt anywhere. The streets - likewise, no dirt or dust to be seen.  This was the 12th century and people did not wash the way we do.  The streets would have been filthy.  Impossible stunts and when the Sheriff of Nottingham said "Yippee" that did it for me.  If they are going to do costume drama then at least be as true to life as possible. I found it a real disappointment but no doubt it will be hugely popular.

Well, I have waffled on enough for today.  Time to get off this chair and get some work done.

Have a good week my friends.

I like the the thought about not being able to tell if the one tile has done the job. S'funny tho, I didn't know computers had roofs let alone one with tiles. I tried to tile pictures once but they didn't work out. Have I got a leak too. There will be an almighty row at PC World if I have. this computer is less than a year old.

I do like all the pictures tho. Beautiful, every one.  JIM.

The little houses are really pretty as is the doctors surgery. Mydoctor has a beautiful little cottage style house with dormer windows and a huge willow tree out front. I'll have to take my camera one day so you can see it. Have a good day! I'n glad you got the roof fixed in time for winter. Jeannette xx

I love your pictures.  You look so good!  Interesting story of the old Willow Tree.   Imagine it being in the middle of a beautiful farm and now look where it sits.  Kind of sad, huh?
Hope that him indoors got the roof fixed right up.

Jeannette, one of the many things I adore about the UK is the quaint structures.  There is nothing like that in the US.  Wow, you are very lucky you found that missing tile.  Water can cause a tremendous amount of damage if not caught.  Have a good day....xx  Chris

Great pictures.  It must have really been raining hard over there.  We had a little rain Sunday morning, but it was more like a mist.  I'd like a good, hard, blowing sideways rain storm (as long as it's on the weekend & I don't have to go out in it.) Linda in WA

I am glad you took your camera with you. Those are great photos. That was very interesting about the Willow Tree. I love the country lanes. The only house that look familiar to ours over here is the Doctors Surgery. Of course there are apartment houses here but not different colors on one building.
Have a nice evening and thanks for sharing your pictures with us. Hugs, helen

Great photos Jeannette,

I was very interested reading of the Willow tree war memorial.  How fitting that such a lovely tree was planted for such a purpose.  When I read of your broken tile it made me think back several years when a broken tile caused water to seep through the plaster in a bedroom.  Jim had to repair the roof, tear down the damaged plaster (and there was a lot) let it dry out and rebuild it.  Thank goodness Mike found yours before it caused any serious damage.  I`m glad I didn`t nother watching Robin Hood, though Jim watched it at work and liked it...there`s no accounting for taste...lol! :o)

I'm glad you got some pictures while you were out and about.  I love seeing your beautiful countryside and picturesque homes. You are so lucky to have Him In Doors do all that handy work.  When something goes wrong here I have to call a roofer and that's always expensive.  It seems every year we loose a shingle or two when the winds get high.  Take good care and I'll be praying that leak is fixed.  'On Ya' - ma

Thanks for sharing the photos Jeannette.

I started to watch Robin Hood but as soon as I saw the girl with full make-up on I switched over!  I was pleased to get some Catherine Cookson dvds in the Daily Mail this weekend, I've probably seen them when they were televised years ago but I think the scenery etc was more true to life than Robin Hood was!

Really good photo of you too, you looked well despite just having been to the doctors!

Best wishes,  Pat

Its a good job that you decided to go on your computer, and not go for a lie down otherwise you could have endedd up with a whole heap of work needing to be done to your home, lovely to see you getting out and about again, the country lane could be a photo taken from round here where I live, loved reading about the willow tree, what a lovely way to remember loved ones who fought and died for our country,
take care Lynne xx

The Willow tree is a wonderful tribute.    Knowing that those who planted it had such emotional attribute to it of their fallen soldiers.    The photos of the local houses are wonderful and I notice that tiles are used extensively.    I had a leak from a gutter where the raised floor is in my cabin and had some water soaked into the floor and insulation that I had to remove and dry out.    I hope the next rain will be kept out by your husbands replacement tile.     mark

My BiL in Canada was given a tiny oak sapling this summer by some visiting English friends and he has planted it on his land (quite a bit of it, as is usual apparently in Canada) so that his boys - grown up now - and their children and all future generations of his family should never forget where their roots lie.  Don't you live in a lovely part of the country?  We are much further north and our trees have yet to turn Autumnal. - Angie, x

I know this is a very late reply Jeannette, but have so many blogs to catch up on and wanted you to know that I AM reading them, albeit very, very late!
Yes you do have some lovely properties near you.  I do so agree with you regards Robin Hood, I am put off by the modern language, it just spoils the whole atmosphere of 'days of yore' for me.
Hope you are keeping well :-)
Freda
ps I am spending as much time out in my garden as possible whilst this lovely Autumn weather lasts (when it isn't raining!)  which is why I am on the ol pooter so little.
