Coming Along

Another weekend gone.  I hope you all remembered to change your clocks.  I do not care much for it being dark around 5 p.m.

Well, him indoors has been hard at work over the last couple of days, bless him.  He has still got such a bad cold/bug whatever it is.  Mine has improved a lot but not gone completely.  Anyway he soldiered on as he wanted to get on with the kitchen.

As I said in a previous entry, we had a dresser in one corner so our kitchen never truly matched.  A pine dresser with grey work surfaces and tiles never did sit easy with me.  However, it was here when we came, the previous owner left it and it was handy for all our china. Although it looked better with the new surfaces, him indoors was still not happy and decided he wanted to build something that would blend in totally.

Here is what we had:-

Here is what we now have:-

Plenty of shelf space, a surface that matches all the others. This is how it looks with the doors closed:-

We have, at the moment, only one problem.  Mike has been unable to find knobs that remotely match what we already have.  I suppose it was to be expected bearing in mind that our current ones have been there years.  So, it might mean having to replace all the knobs - all twenty-six of them which is something we had not bargained for!  He is going to have another hunt, we might strike lucky yet.

Next weekend the new cooker is going in.  I have mixed feelings.  I am happy to have a new cooker of course, but all my life I have cooked with gas.  This new one is electric and I am going to have to adapt to that and learn all the temperatures.  I suppose it is what you are used to and with gas prices the way that they are, we might be slightly better off with the bills.  I still have my gas hob.  So next Saturday, the electrics will be off for most of the day.  Oh, what will I do without my computer!!!!  However, it will be worth it because then the kitchen will actually be finished.

Now we can actually start putting things back in the kitchen, everything has had to be stored in other rooms and when you live in a small bungalow that is no joke.

I was so pleased over the weekend. I had a contact from Friends Re-United.  A lot of the girls I remember from school do not appear on that site and others that do I only knew vaguely.  I was so happy then to hear from Doreen B.  We went to the same schools and were in the same classes from the age of five until we left school at almost seventeen.  Imagine how stunned I was to find out that for many years, she has been living quite close to me!!  Well, only about twenty minutes drive away.  Hopefully we can meet when we have finished doing what we need to do to our home.  She remembered my Mother's Pekingese dog, our family home and talked about the school plays.  She was a good friend of mine and I am so happy to be in contact with her again after so very many years.  She has just become a grandmother and has already sent me her picture (I would still have known her) and she is in the photo with her daughter and beautiful Grand-daughter.  I have been a member of Friends for several years and, after all this time, I never expected this.

Well, I have some mirrors and other glass to clean, so I had better get off here and do something to show willing as him indoors is busy putting everything back in the kitchen and it is making me feel guilty (well just a little)

Wishing you all a good week.

Your kitchen looks great. I do like the old cupoard also. I am glad you are about finished and will be getting a new stove soon. That is great that you have been chatting with one of your classmate friends. Hope that you two can meet soon and chat away until your hearts are content. Hugs, Helen

wish I lived there I love the old hutch well it matches my kitchen verynicely. your new one he built is very nice match to your kitchen though. maybe look online for knobs and handles you may find some that match. its expensive to replace all those. too expensive. Im hoping he gets over his cold soon. oh would drive me nuts wiotut electric all day. yes when we tore the kitchen and hall apart it all went inother rooms and when I did my pantry it all went in other rooms lol does make it crowded.

I love the pine dresser but what Mike has made looks so much better. . hes made a very good job of it .It looks all nice and clean. .you will be pottering in your nice new kitchen all day! I have an electric cooker . .I was going to get a gas one but thought all those trivet things take a lot of cleaning. . plus the gas prices swayed me to sticking with electric.I love it cos the hob is glass and you only have to wipe it over with hob cleaner so I am sure you will love electric cooking.I think its much healthier too as they say gas is linked to Asthma. . not sure how true that is though .Hope you find your knobs.

Now I need to know the difference between the cob and the cooker.  I thought the cooker was the stove...but now not sure.. Just a little difference here.  Sometimes we have a seperate oven and stove top, but mine is all one unit.  I hope you like the electric it will take some time to get used to.  I've had both.  Gas is expensive isn't it.  Glad you're feeling some better, hopefully him indoors will feel better soon too !  'On Ya' - ma

I love the old cupboard.  The new ones really make the kitchen look modern and fit in well.  Very nice!  Him Indoors did a wonderful job!!  Send him my way for a day or two.  I have a few projects!
Hope you find the knobs you need. It will be an adjustment getting used to electric but you'll do it.  I've used both.  I admit...I like gas better. But, I've got electric now,  and do fine.  It will be so fun for you to put your kitchen back together and enjoy it.
Have a good day........Pam

The old dresser is exactly what I'm looking for to replace an old wire bakers rack.  It's mostly for decoration and doesn't hold much of anything.  Mike does wonderful work..very nice.  Linda in WA

Hi Jeanette~
I love the the new cabinet! Great job :). I had the same dilema with knobs on our cupboards when we lived in Cold Springs (Reno, NV). Since I had some times on my hands and was only working 4 days a week, I went to the craft store and bought nude "wooden knobs" and painted them myself. They came out so beautiful. I wish I had pictures of them to show you....darnit!
If you want any more info where I got my materials, let me know ok? It's really easy to do and a very fun project! :)

Have a grea day!

Gayla

The kitchen is looking excellent and your husbands work must be rewarding to him and might help him forget about his cold.    I hope he is feeling better.    It is always great to communicate with a friend that remembers your family home and times when you were growing up.     mark

Hi Jeanette, love your new kitchen, made me go green with envy. The thing to remember with an electric hob it takes longer to heat up.  I thought I would never get used to it, but as we have no gas mains in the middle of nowhere, where I live it was a case of having to - I have adjusted now. Your husband is a brick I hope you told him so (sure you did). From Pamwas22.

Must admit i do prefer the mornings being lighter...Doesn't bother me what time it gets dark in the evening as it was getting dark here early anyways...This morning it didn't feel like G was leaving for school in the middle of the night...I've never had anyone contact me from friends reuinted and i have been registered with them for years, almost since they first started...I did help a friend find his older half sister and brother and father via them though...It was a semi happy outcome as his sister was delighted and has kept in touch with him since then around 3 years ago :o) Kitchen looks fab and i would hate to change to electric from gas...Although an electric oven i would like but can't afford to do my kitchen at all  Caff xxxx

Hi Jeanette,  Your kitchen now looks wonderful. Like the new colours. I can well understand what you say about everything beingn all over the house I have just ben having my kitchen done and had the same problem. But isn't it lovely when you go in and look around and give a wee smile and nod to indicate a good job done.  Have a good week.  Sybil

It's funny that you bring up the knobs. We bought our house six years ago and couldn't find knobs we liked. We still have no knobs on the cabinets. I've gotten so used to openning them without the knobs that I had forgotten.

Hello Jeannette,

Thanks for putting the photos on for us to see Mike's handiwork, please congratulate him for me - he's made a very good job of it!  By the way, did you know that you can get a temperature converter from Lakeland?  It's a fridge magnet and comes in the shape of a bowl, there is also another converter (weights) in the shape of a jug that comes with it.  When my aunt got a new electric oven I bought her the set of magnets so she could see at a glance what the oven temperature should be, she didn't want the weights and measures one so I've got that!

Hope you and Mike are feeling a lot better now.

Mike's doing a great job for you can I borrow him for a day or two. I liked your old dresser but I have not had to live with it. Have a good week Love joan.

You new dresser is great he is clever to be able to do that for you. I felt te same about switching to electricity but flats always have electric as it is safer. It is cleaner and cheaper to only have one bill as I am all electric. You will soon get used to it. I have never found any of my friends at Friends reunited....it must be great to find an old pal. Love Conniex

We live in a tiny bungalow too and I agree, finding somewhere to put things while you decorate - or even just spring clean - their usual place is a nightmare - Angie, x
