Hi everybody,
Please stand well away from your computers whilst I scream at the top of my voice.
My computer had to go in for repair last Monday after we were refused an engineer to come out despite having a service agreement. All three drives had packed up completely so I was unable to back up anything and Windows had also developed a fault.
We were promised that we would have it back by Tuesday afternoon. Errr - No. Tuesday came and went, Wednesday came and went. On Thursday afternoon Mike trundled down to the store to find out they had not even started working on it.
We left specific notes as to what was wrong including the fact that we had not been able to back up anything. Later that evening I got a phone call. Err, do you want us to back up your data? I asked them what the instructions said. Oh, you must want your data backed up then I was told. That will be £30. I was told. Oh well, at least I would not lose quite everything. I was promised it for Friday afternoon. Friday afternoon Mike goes there again. Yes, nearly finished he was told. Then they said they wanted to ring me. I was told that everything was fixed APART from the floppy A drive. They had been unable to rectify that. That would have to order in the part. I told them forget it, as long as the other drives are working, I can live without floppy A. I just wanted my computer back. No can do I was told. Once it is in for repairs we cannot let it out until it is fully working because customers will accuse us of not doing our job properly. But I will sign a piece of paper accepting responsibility I told them I just want my computer back. It is my property and I want it. Hurried words from the engineer to his boss. No can do. You can have it back in ten to twelve days.
Loud scream from me. Mike then phones. I will get another cheap computer he says, that will tide you over and I can have it when yours eventually does come back. He suggested this because this is the second time the drives have packed up on that computer and I no longer trust them.
So the new computer comes home. I tried to load AOL - it was not having any of it. I tried repeatedly. Nothing. I phoned Dean in desperation. He came over and spent three hours fiddling. Nothing. In the end we gave in and phoned the helpline. Oh yes, we have upgraded the BT drivers since you installed it, you will not be able to get online unless you do this and this and this. Luckily Dean knows quite a bit about them and flew through the instructions in no time. Hence I am able to do this entry now. But it is 1.20 a.m. now. I also have a stinking cold and a splitting headache and tight chest.
Was that the end of my problems? Oh no. I needed my family tree maker programme back on. Luckily I had backed up all the information around two months ago. Dean puts the programme on for me and then goes to re-install the data. Remember, this represents over twelve years research and several thousands pounds. Many of my informants who supplied information and photograhs have now died. Dean checked the disc, the data was there. But will it load on - NO. It keeps saying that the disc I am trying to load is newer than the programme. This is utter rubbish. I have not bought a new family tree maker programme in about three years and the back up disc, as I said, was only created two months ago. Of course, I do have it also backed up on floppy discs, over fifty of them but I have no floppy disc on this computer.
By this time it is quarter to one a.m. and Dean is on his knees and so I am, especially since I feel so awful with this cold. He had to give up. So at the moment we have no idea how we can retrieve those twelve years of dedicated research.
Oh, I also lost all the games I bought and paid for and all my favourite places have gone, all my graphics sites, special sites where I purchased things.
To say I am pig sick is an understatement. I shall have to spend the weekend, if I am well enough, trying to re-load programmes and trying to find sites again. If anyone has some good graphics sites please send them to me.
No, Dean cannot help tomorrow. He and Mike are replacing all the work surfaces in our kitchen. Dean has been delivering stuff all week, they have everything they need to get on with it so there will be plenty of banging and hammering going on. It badly needs doing and I am so grateful for Dean's help but, why of why, does everything come at once!!!!!!!!!
I hope to get back to your journals early next week, provided I have not gone totally insane by that time.
P.S. Sorry this entry is not accompanied by my usual graphics and a signature but I do not have any loaded right now. Also well done to all the nominees in the Vivi Awards, many names I recognise. Big thanks for the organisers for their hard work. Thank you all for your congratulations on my nominations. At least when I actually got into my email I had a nice surprise as I had no idea that the nominations had been announced. Now I must get to bed before I fall off this chair. It is almost 2 a.m. now. Sighs.

Computers are wonderful when they work right...you poor thing! I just know that about 4 0r 5 times I've gone through the same thing so I can sympathize. My graphics aren't very good so I won't reccomend where they come from. I'm afraid they are all freebies. I just hope when you get your old computer back and will have all your 'stuff' backed up on it. 'On Ya' - ma

Oh my have I been in your shoes before on this subject. I can so relate to the paid games, the programs...and all. That was about 3 yrs ago for me, but the pain of it all still stings. By the way...I have gone highspeed now..and my goal tomorrow is to go back and look at some of your recent video's that used to take my dial up forever...but some of yours, I was headstrong and tried to watch...and did. I can't wait to return and see the beautiful place you call home...England!
Many hugs and love...hope the computer repairs go well...and also, CONGRATULATIONS on being nominated...your journal has always been #1 in my book...many hugs and love,
Joyce
I feel your pain...I've gone thru the same thing with my prevous computer. And I too worried about my Family Tree Maker. When my son-in-law brought me the one I'm using now..he made sure to put the FTM on a disk. Hopefull this will all resolve for you soon. Linda in WA
Congratulations on your Vivi nomination!
I can hear you screaming here in MO. LOL
Watch your email, sending you lots of graphic sites!
Hugs,
Sugar
I am so sorry all this is going on with you Jeannette. I can feel your pain. Hopefully when you get the other computer back your family tree will be still be on it. I have been wondering how long it was going to be before your got computer back after Sandra posted about it for you. I am sorry, I don't have any graphic sites or I would surely share with you. Congratulations on your Vivi Awards nominations. Good luck to you. Hope you have a better day tomorrow even with the work going on aroud your home. Hope your sickness goes and you feel lots better soon. Hugs, Helen
((((((((((((((((((((JEANNETTE)))))))))))))))))))))))))))Thats a bummer.I hope it all gets worked out.Have a good weekend.
I believe that when you get your old computer it will have all your important files and software. Then you can begin transferring all of the files to your new purchase. Your old computer could then be a dedicated 'back up' computer which does not need daily use until perhaps a weekly backup usage. At least you can let us know how you are doing daily now and we are glad you are back. Congratulation on the heart felt nomination for your journal on the VIVI Awards! mark
What a nightmare!! OMG I can't believe you are going through all of this. I'd want to take a hammer either to the computer or to my head!
I hope you feel better soon and get it all sorted out.
Pam
Oh lord what a mess. I know how hard it is to do all that research, I hope everything will be retrieved from the old computer Take a break, don't stress yourself out too much especially if you are sick already. Wishing you a better week....Sandi
Oh Jeannette, I do feel for you. I'm just hoping your family tree information will still be on your old computer along withyour graphics sites etc. I know what it's like when the computer goes wrong and you can't get it up and running again. Poor Dean, he sounds like he's worked hard for you, I hope he manages to get the kitchen work tops installed easier than it was to get the new computer going. I shan't say have a good weekend incase you scream again and frighten the neighbours! Jeannette xx
Hello Jeannette,
I've missed your entries and now I know why! I do hope your computer problems are sorted soon and that you still have all your important information. I went through the same thing a few years ago when my step-daughter's ex-boyfriend said he'd fix mine and had it for three weeks and it STILL wasn't done! My husband ended up buying me a new computer but I did lose a lot of stuff.
Most of all though, I do wish you better. I think if you are not feeling good every nasty thing seems magnified. My favourite saying is 'This too will pass', not much comfort at the moment I know but things WILL get better for you and you have so many people wishing you well.
Pat
Sorry to hear about your troubles with your computer. I have my old unit looking at me which went kaput with loads of old photos on that I hadn't saved to disc. You are more techie than me but can't you go back on your old entries and get some of your graphics back, e.g. signatures and videos because I can still see them when I have just looked. I hope so. Keeping my fingers crossed that all will still be intact on your old computer. Terry x
Jeanette, that's awful, what format is your famil tree, I may be able to help you recover the data, let me know if I can.
Sandra let us know that you had computer troubles.I dont know what I would do if the same happened to me. . . .I would be out of my mind though I havent got all the precious family tree stuff like you have.I hope everything is there for you when you get the other one back.Hey. . congratulations on the nomination Jeannette!!!Hope your cold is better

Hi Jeannette,
I was getting worried that you were maybe ill! I can only sympatise with you. If something happens to my computer I would be finished. I rely on it for all my work and I would be homeless without it! Some years ago someone broke into my office and not only stole my laptop but also all the floppies where I saved my work. I don't understand why they did that, but I was desperate. I had spent weeks on a job even neglecting my family and not only I lost the income from the job but also the client who wouldn't believe that the thieves had taken the floppies as well. Anyway I survived that as well....All the best!
Ciao

Deep breaths! i think you have just gone through the heights of frustration. Your blood pressure must be sky high! I do welcome you back, however. I missed you! Tomorrow will be a better day!

Hello my dear friend,
I didn`t think it could get any worse than what you`d already told me, no wonder you want to scream. If it`d been me I`d have screamed myself hoarse by now. If there are anymore links I can send you or anything I can help you with, you know you only have to ask. Congrats on your nominations, you certainly deserve them. :o)
Hugs

After reading this, I'm frustrated and upset FOR you! What a mess. I hope you are able to get everything back and running just the way you like it very soon. You're so lucky to have a great guy like Dean to help you. He sounds like a terrific SIL!!!
Feel better very soon. Having a cold just makes all of the computer problems seem worse!
Hugs, Kathy
Goodness, Jeannette! I would be livid and pulling my hair out. My computer is a year old. I've had two things repaired plus been sent a new monitor. Becky, my oldest, installed an external back-up drive for me. I should also save everything to disc but am clueless in the technological world. Glad you have Dean to help you out. Wonderful that you have your family tree on an external program. That would be heartbreaking to lose that. xx Chris
