A Village Tour (Video Entry)

It is a lovely bright sunny day here and this October is set to be one of the warmest on record if temperatures stay at this level.

I watched one of my favourite programmes on t.v. last night. "Who do you think you are?"  The person researching their family history was Nigella Lawson and although I am not a great fan of hers, the programme had me gripped.  Her Grandfather was a managing director of J.Lyons & Co. and during part of the programme she had a conversation with Peter Bird.  Hey, I realised, I know that person.  Mr. Bird and I corresponded quite a lot when I was researching my family tree. Several members of my family worked for J.Lyons and I contacted him to ask if any work records remained that would be available. Alas, they were not, but this started a correspondence between us. When I told him I still had my Grandfather's pass card (my Grandmother should have handed it back after his death) he was very interested and asked me to send a scan to him. When I did, he kindly included it on the J.Lyons site where maybe it still is.  I am so glad I watched the programme and found out more about the founders of the firm.

I have another video for you today which I hope you will enjoy.  At least it will give you a few minutes in your busy lives to sit back and relax.  So, without further ado -

I mentioned a cross in the graveyard.  There is no name on it and it is made of iron.  Iron was well-known for keeping witches firmly underground when they had departed this mortal coil.   In some cases, the joints of bodies of suspected witches were riveted together with iron bolts just to make sure they could not return from the grave.

They do say that if you run around the church anti-clockwise three times on New Year's Eve, you will come face to face with the devil.

On Halloween, the police have to close the road in and out of the village due to the large number of people drawn to the place by legends and folklore.

Finally, a reminder that the suggestions for Vivi Awards nominations closes this coming Sunday. Then the voting site will be announced and you have three days thereafter to cast your final votes.

Thanks for the video and local history tour, I love to visit old churches and cathedrals, and read up the history  about them and the memorial stones, the only one that I didnt like and felt really uncomfortable in as soon as I walked in the doors was Durham Cathedral, I couldnt wait to get out of there, normally I can spend a good few hours just looking around them
take care Lynne xx

Thanks for this fascinating entry Jeannette,  Not only was I really interested in the video itself but you have a great voice for a documentary, I think you might have missed your vocation!  I really should watch Who Do You Think You Are, but I keep forgetting it`s on. :o)

I did get your alert earlier this afternoon , but I was at work and now that I'm finally home again, I just now had time to sit down and watch your video.  I am so impressed by the old buildings and the church.  We think we have old ones here, but nothing can compare -- our country isn't even as old as some of your churches.   I have always wanted to visit England and now thanks to you, I have seen so much that I'd never thought possible.  I love the tales of the witches and such and think that many of them were just ordinary people with extraordinary gifts that made people fear them.  I can hardly wait to see where you'll be visiting next !  'On Ya' - ma

I loved your video..it seemed like I was there and you were showing me around.  The countryside looks like it does here.

I loved the video. My ex wife and I visited England a few years ago, but we only went to the tourist areas (we did stay at Amberly Castle as well) but we didn't get much exposure to anything outside of that. I realize that my imression of England realy only came from five plaves before I "discovered" all the UK journals. It came from old WWII footage, our vacation there, and three movies Brassed Off, The full Monty, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. Probably not a realistic view I'd think.

Hi Jeannette. I enjoyed your video SO MUCH!!  Thank you for doing this!  I've ALWAYS wanted to visit England.  Your history is so extensive there....unlike here.  "Him Indoors" films so good and "Her at the Computer" narrates so well.  Were you a teacher when you worked??  I could listen to you all day long!
SO INTERESTING!!  Thank you again.
Pam
