Misty Monday

Yes, it is actually quite misty here this morning although the sun is trying to burn it off. But there is a coolness and a freshness to the morning that we have not had for some time.

Mike had to take a tree down on Saturday.  I was very sad. I hate to see trees die, it is almost like a physical pain to me. However, there was nothing we could do to save this one.  It was in our front garden in a small circular bed, a beautifully shaped conifer.  It had been our companion for ten years.  It was the first thing we saw when we drew back the curtains in the morning, standing like a sentinel guarding our home.  I had watched it grow from a six inch sapling.  I had seen it covered with snow.  It really came into its own each Christmas when it was hung with festive lights.  Firstly it developed brown patches, then the brown patches spread until in the end there was more brown than green, the branches were brittle and without sap.  I could not watch Mike take it down.

Now it is gone.  I have a better view of the street, I can see more of the people passing by but I miss our woody friend.  We can only put it down to the climate.  This is the second tree we have lost in a year.  We are having unusually dry winters and much hotter summers.  I think many more trees will disappear across the country if this trend continues.  We have decided not to replace it.  Instead we have placed a large flower-filled tub out there.

Yesterday we did a lot of pruning.  At least I did some but Mike did the majority.  Considering the lack of rain it is amazing how things have gone berserk with growth this year. We already tidied things in the spring but we had to severely prune about four shrubs and a couple of trees.

Mike has just gone to the local tip with fifteen very large bugs of cuttings.  Yes, fifteen bags which will give you some idea of the work involved.

Both evenings I have sat by the pool, the t.v. has not even been switched on.  Early last evening I watched a dragonfly make endless circles above the water and spotted several more butterflies. We have our pool lit at night so I was out there until quite late.  Here are a couple of shots taken just as it was getting dark.

When it gets too damp to stay outside or I decide to come back in, we can still see it as it is directly outside our lounge.  We often have the lounge lights out and just sit by the light of the pool.  Very relaxing.

We are having Nathan for the afternoon today, again tomorrow morning and then Wednesday afternoon so I am going to be quite busy this week.  It gives Becky a much needed break.  She is suffering so badly from back pain this time and what with Nathan and the builders, she is very tired and looks very pale.  We will be happy for her when baby arrives and she no longer suffers this endless pain.  Obviously, she is not allowed to take anything for it.

Well, much as I love sitting here writing and reading, I had better get on and get the place tidy before our little man arrives.  Hope you all have a good week.

I share the sadness about the tree dying. It was not just your companion (so to speak) but also a much needed haven to all sorts of wild life. I live in a suburb of London and most people have done away with their gardens (no need for them to cart away 15 bags of garden waste!) so fewer places for the birds etc. I love, truly love, the picture of your lit-up pool. It is so lovely and, I imagine, utterly absorbing at times. Thank you for all you share.

Your pond looks a magical place surrounded by those pretty lights.  I can just imagine fairies and elves hiding in amongst the shrubs and flowers!  How sad to have to say goodbye to your conifer.  We have lost a couple over the last few years and we have to cut down another that has seen better days too, it is more brown than green.  We now only have the one and it is doing really well thankfully.  I agree that the change in our climate has to be to blame.

I forgot to say that I hope Becky feels a little more comfortable now it is cooler.  Is there nothing she can take for pain relief?  Kerry was told to take paracetamol for pain if it got too bad.  She won`t take it though.

Very pretty pictures of your pond and flowers. So sorry about the loss of your tree. Maybe you can take a picture of the tub you put there as a replacement. Hope Becky soon feels better. I know it is a great help to her when you and Mike have Nathan over for the afternoon. Glad you all are having some cooler weather. Helen

Poor tree :o(
Your pond looks beautiful though, all lit up.  It reminds me of walking through Shanklin chine at night, on the Isle of Wight because it's all lit up like that there :o)  Very pretty.
Have fun with Nathan.

You have such a beautiful place, I envy you. Thank you for offering the recipe. Please don't go out of your way, but if you run across any, I would love to have some. Being disabled, the only traveling I can do is with my eyes on the web. I am still in awe of the fact that I can talk to people from all over the world! You live in a beautiful part of this world. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Love the cute graphic. Sorry to hear about the conifer tree. I agree, its the change in the weather...we have lost several trees this year. The lighted pool is truly lovely. Can see why you enjoy sitting outside. Poor Becky, with a toddler their house, the weather...hope she is able to get some rest....before the baby arrives. Know you will have fun watching, Nathan the next few days. Take care.

Yes Jeannette, trees are very important.  I will write about my love of trees in my journal this week.  I think you will enjoy it.  Your pond with the lights looks like a creation out of fantasy with the way the colors appear on the forms of plants (lily pads) and brightly lit flowers and irredescent blue water!  Precious and serene time spent lounging in its splendor.  Your journal has ranged from the every day, to the comical, the topical, and now to the sublime.  So much time well spent instead of watching re-runs on TV!    Best wishes,  ~mark~
